What is the Meaning of an Admission Deadline?

Anyway, it probably has been asked a bunch, but when a college's deadline is, say, January 1st, does that mean that everything has to be in their office january 1st or just the app and everything else can follow?

I'm pretty sure it means you just have to press "Submit" by 11:59 PM of January 1st, and that your teachers/counselors must have your paper work (secondary school report/recommendation letters) sent by then.

I think it's more generous than what you were thinking?

In most cases, everything available online (common app & supplements) are supposed to be submitted by the first, and everything on paper is to be postmarked by the 1st. The only exception I can think of would be SAT scores

Just the app and the supplement.

Submitted by the first meaning by 11:59 PM ON the 1st right? or does it mean on Dec 31st?

11:59PM on the 1st (check time zone, just to be sure)

so everything MUST be sent by the 1st? wow that stinks. I guess i can forget all my jan 1st schools

The app and the supplement MUST be submitted online by 11:59 on January 1st or POSTMARKED January 1st. As for SAT scores, teacher/gc recs, transcripts, etc., the adcom realizes these are out of your control and allows for more leeway.
