Really depends on large school vs small school. UMiami? LOVE… but does it really have the school spirit and traditional collegial feel that the orginal poster inquired about?

The most “complete” school is Stanford.

^Par72, I find it humorous (but not surprising!) that you would put Holy Cross in this discussion…

The University of Miami fits your criteria.

-Ranked 47 in USNWR
-Receives tons of money in grants and other aid for research
-Division I sports with one of the most prolific football teams in NCAA history
-Vibrant social life with the city of Miami being amazing!

I left off Duke because of its football troubles and because I believe a “complete” school must have a good college town to boot. I haven’t been out to California since I was a small child so I really don’t know much about the locales surrounding USC and UCLA, although they do have the athletic+academic combo part going. The schools I listed (UNC, Wisconsin, Vanderbilt, Michigan) all have the distinction of being located in great college towns.

I’d probably add Georgia Tech, too, if you are math or science oriented. Atlanta isn’t really a “college town”, but Georgia Tech is located in a pretty cool area.

Correction:

Coach of the Decade: Jim Tressel 105-22

“8” (not 7) 10+ wins out of 10 seasons as the HC at The Ohio State University!!

Go Bucks!! lol

Must be the sweater vest.

And it’s not only in fball, our bball program is currently ranked 2nd in the nation. :)

Jake –

The most complete schools that match your stats are:

Miami

Syracuse

SMU

TCU

Schools I did not include only because they don’t really have big time football or basketball are: Tulane, Boston U, Baylor (for religious reasons), U of San Diego.

Now, I don’t know what state you’re in, but your stats should match your state Flagship quite well.

^^Miami needs to find a fball HC first!! ;p

“Pitt’s UPMC and center for neuroscience (visited the campus, loved it, and I’m considering it)”

OTHO, Pitt +1!!! UPMC is top-notch!!
Plus, Pitt might be included in the next round of Big Ten expansion!! lol

Jake – now I see you live in Indiana. So I suppose IU would be a great all-around experience for you. the campus is one of the nicest in the US. I think your stats would place you in the top 25% of the student body, so getting professorial attention for mentoring, research, and grad school recs would be likely.

Do you want to be in the bottom 50% (stats wise) of the school you attend, or the top 25%? That is a critical question with lots of nuances and implications. I think you’d agree that the last thing you’d want is to be competing for grad-school and career affecting grades with a class full of students who tested and performed in class higher than you in high school.

P.S. 2030 SAT – what was your CR and especially, for your interests, Math SAT? I don’t think most adcoms care much about Writing SAT score.

my cr + math is 1320. I’d much rather be in the top 25% of a school I attend because I intend to be a pre-med. But also I don’t want to go to an easy school just to get good grades.
I’ve been accepted to IU, but I’m really looking for research/volunteer/internship opportunities in a college & IU doesn’t really seem to have that.
For example, I was considering a place like Case Western because of its close proximity to plenty of medical centers for research/volunteering/internships. But then again, it doesn’t have that “well rounded” qualification so I’m not sure if it would fit me.
I was also considering places like Pitt (close to UPMC, top med school, good neuroscience research, great NIH funding, etc), University of michigan, and colleges like those. I’ve gotten into pitt but I’m waiting on my Umich decision which should be out by the 20th. I’ve applied to georgia tech, UIUC, notre dame, johns hopkins, case western, and umich all early action (except jhu, which was ED) and will hear back from all these places by the 20th.
I know that not all the colleges that I applied to above even fit my criteria, but I just went ahead & applied everywhere that had good reputation for my major & figured I’d decide later.
I was just wondering if any other colleges would fit this criteria that I haven’t considered yet.

Everyone thinks their own school is, but as goofy as rankings can be, it may be good to sample some for yourself:

[Center for Measuring University Performance: Top American Research Universities](http://mup.asu.edu/research2009.pdf). Perhaps the best straight quantitative (non-opinion survey) ranking combining metrics for research (funding $, awards) and academics (e.g. SAT scores), etc.

Most others are one (undergrad: US News) or the other (research:ARWU).
