so I'm trying out for some prep schools. Which is most important:
- SSAT scores
-Extracurriculars
-Grades
-Recommendations
-Interview

They are ALL important. Here is my opinion:

SSAT scores and GPA probably need to make a minimum threshold. The school probably doesn’t make big deal between a SSAT 89 percentile score vs a 92 percentile score, so i wouldn’t obsess about your score

In the interview, the school wants to confirm that the child & parents are actually enthusiastic about the child attending the school, and that the child is not being “dumped” at the school, and that the parents are supportive of the considerable commitment.

Teacher recs are important to assess intellectual curiosity & potential.

The EC’s are an opportunity for the student to showcase a “hook”

You forgot to mention ESSAYS. Essays are very, very important. The schools get so many applications from BWRK’s (bright well-rounded kids), so the essay is an opportunity for the applicant to stand out from the crowd.

Other important dimensions are:
- geographic residency
- nationality
- ethnicity
- socio-economic status

The admissions people are trying to assemble an interesting, diverse, well-rounded class
