WUSTL, NYU, Emory, Vandy (a tiny bit), Notre Dame.

Penn (in usnews at least), duke, nyu, wustl. no question.

NYU's not really overrated because it's very lowly ranked in USNews than it should be, I feel. No way is NYU #37. It should be higher. Whereas some schools are too highly ranked than it should be-- i.e WUSTL, UPenn, Notre Dam, et al

Students in many of these "overrated" schools enjoy smaller classes 100% taught by professors rather then TAs, live in better dorms, eat better food, enjoy complete social life surrounded by as qualified student body as in any top 10 school. I am talking about Wustl, Emory, Vandy, etc.. These students will also enjoy warmer weather and some of them (actually many) will pay less due to merit scholarships, better financial aid, etc. due to high endowments these colleges have and use (part of the reason for higher rankings for these schools).

I agree with DTan.

Also, some schools may be overranked, but not overrated. Maybe WUSTL manipulated numbers to rise in the rankings, and maybe those "peers" who do the rankings may be a tad prejudiced against religious or state-affiliated schools. But USNWR is not the only thing determining a school's reputation- most people have ever heard of WUSTL- how can it be "overrated"?. In the top 20 or top 50 schools there is not a huge difference in educational quality, so should it all come down to where they fall on some biased list? (which I'm sure I have obsessed over as much as, or more than, all of you) Also, if those aforementioned schools are overranked, which should take their place?

There are some overrated schools of course- but it all depends on which group of people you are talking to. In the general population, NYU and Harvard (undergrad!!!) are overrated. At my high school, Tufts, American, and GW are overrated. In California, the UCs are overrated, while elsewhere they may be underrated. And on these boards, the Ivies and the UCs are often overrated, while certain schools are often underrated: Notre Dame, Vanderbilt, Emory, WUSTL take a lot more flak than they deserve.

Penn, Duke, WUSTL.

BU and NYU. The only reason their hot right now is because of their location. Not that I think they're bad schools or anything, but I must call them out on this charge

In US News:
Penn, Notre Dame, and WUStL

So....

What gives you people the credentials to make these judgements. Why is WUSTL 'overrated'? Because it gets credit even though it's not a brand-name Ivy League school?

Terrible thread

I think Penn is overrated on USNEWS because I think the cheif editor or someones big @ USNEWS went there....

I'll defend BU a bit-- BU is annoyingly popular because of its location, but why would that make it "hot right now," as someone said? Boston hasn't suddenly become more popular... same for NYU. The "hotness" is more about them being well-located, well-regarded safety schools, unfortunately.
But anyhow, I rather think BU's virtues don't get enough notice-- witness its great ranking in the Times of London.

WesternMass,

Everything is in our own opinion. Don't ****ing ask what our credentials are.
Irrelevant. What are our credentials to tell others what their chances are to get into certain schools. None. This website probably would not exist under your interpretation of what is debatable such as the over or under ranking of certain schools.

NYU.

What gives anyone on the internet the credentials to say anything? Lighten up. Don't like the thread, then don't click.

bananainpyjamas, I was just about to quote the same person.

We're not publishing a report that says WUSTL is officially an overrated school. It's just a casual discussion.

Many of us just doesn't think it offers the same undergraduate quality as similarily ranked schools such as Dartmouth and Columbia.

Btw my vote goes to NYU. It's overrated because of its location. Maybe not overranked, but overrated.

Are you people dense? I'm asking a simple question: HOW are you determining that a school is overrated? Unless you have attended multiple schools, maybe you should stop making patently ridiculous comments.

"HOW are you determining that a school is overrated?"

Program strength, recruiter rep, job opps. You can't tell me WUSTL (except maybe for pre-med) is better than say, Cornell/Brown/Northwestern at a wide variety of fields for program strength, recruiter rep, or job opps (yet it is ranked higher than all 3).

Vanderbilt does not have a large endowment. Stop using it as an excuse to say it's overrated when you're most likely unhappy that it's ranked higher(or much higher) than your school. Vanderbilt offers solid programs across the board and is particularly exceptional in the area of education.

Yup. Very dense. Very, very dense indeed.

HOW do you know that Georgetown is academically stronger than Tufts? Unless you have attended both schools, you should stop making patently ridiculous comments.

^ lol.. OWNED
