Silicon Valley private: SJSU, Cal Poly SLO, Santa Clara, UCB, UCD, UCSB, UCLA, Chico State, San Diego St, SF State, Sonoma State, USC, U San Francisco, Loyola Marymount…not too many venture out of state.
Next in order, though are: UNR, U Arizona, U Oregon, Arizona St, Oregon State, and UW.
Once again, they don’t venture far…
Mid-sized suburban NJ public: Rutgers, Penn State, UDel, UMD. From the grade after me (class of 2016), a whopping 24 kids attended UDel. That was more than any other college, including Rutgers. First time that’s happened in a long time, I think.
Haha, thats pretty much most high schools in Texas.

SUNY schools. After that, I’m not sure, but big southern schools seem pretty popular. We are in a suburb of New York City. Very few kids venture off the East Coast. On the big college choice map in the guidance office, there are huge clusters of push pins in New York State, then a whole bunch up and down the coast, maybe three or four in California or Arizona. Then there’s one lonely pushpin in the Midwest and that’s my daughter’s!
- UCLA
- UC Berkeley
- UCSD
Cornell, NYU, UMich, Syracuse, Binghamton
- UC's (Berkeley & Los Angeles mostly for the top 10%, but usually there's at least a few at every campus.)
- SF State (Everyone uses this as a safety and at least 10 kids from each graduating class go.)
- Saint Mary's College of California (Lots of teachers and staff are SMC alumni, so I can see why it attracts a lot of us.)
- Cal State East Bay (Also a super common safety)
From my high school many kids in Virginia went to state schools and OOS schools were very uncommon. We had 5 students go to William and Mary (including myself), 13 go to University of Virginia, 40-50 go to James Madison University, around 60 for Virginia Tech, and a few students went to ivies like Cornell, Penn, and one student go to MIT.
