Chuck Norris once kicked a man with a roundhouse kick that was so fast, his foot went back in time and killed Amelia Earhart.

Actually James Halifax is just a Nickname that my friends gave me.
I'm really Chinese.
Thanks for the help!

"My other hook is quite weak. I've written a research paper in Neuropsychology and it should be published in an upcoming addition of The Whitman Journal of Psychology."

I think I'm going to go kill myself now.

omg***bbq? How am I supposed to compete?

I don't know if I actually emphasized any hooks in my application (??? aaack!), but I'm mostly along the lines of "female visual artist in art magnet school plays musical instruments (in marching band, which is rare at least in my district... great, I can get into UNC-Greeley and smell like cows for the rest of my life) and, oh yeah, kind of likes obscure geometry and wants to be an engineer."

How am I supposed to get into any college in the US with people around who think writing publishable papers on neuropsychology is small fish? That's what I want to know. headdesk

Not that you're a bad person!!! XD I'm just intimidated to the utmost extent. That's a good thing. I think. Well, for you at least. :}

(duuude... whiskey tango foxtrot gets censored. That is fantabulous. XD)

Well its a big coutry and that means a lot of smart people. Keep in mind that most of the applicants for MIT are probably the smartest students in the US, which means that overall you are on a high position as well. But I think the amount of students who done done stuff like that is no more than 500, which is not that high.

For what it's worth, I don't think the majority of accepted students have research experience. At least, the majority of my friends here didn't do research when they were in high school.

It just seems like it on CC. :)

Sorry for the latency in my responses, I was taking a break from CC.
:)

Apparently, I was deffered from EA and will be with the rest of the RD applicants [:-(]. Anyway, to answer your questions (although I am probably too late), I put down ALL of my diverse interests and pursuits. See, I'm interested in Neuropsychology, Biological Engineering and Alternative Energies/Mechanical Engineering.

I'm distinct from most applicants in that I have followed through with all of my interests. In Neuropsychology, I've written one research paper (should be published in the Whitman Journal). Likewise, I've pursued (in greater depth) Alternative Energies and MechE by not only patenting 13 related inventions, but also by working on converting an automobile to run on hydrogen (I've converted a generator and am working on refining the technology and working towards implementing it on an car). In BioEngineering (the field I declared my major to be), I have only researched options for using a photosynthesizing, hydrogen-generating microbe in my designs.

Though I've done a great deal of research in this field, I don't think I have expressed (strongly enough) my interest in Biology. Aside from mentioning it as a field I've studied greatly and mentioning its application in the hydrogen experimentation, I didn't really provide a strong enough linkage between my interests. In contrast, I widened the gap by including and mentioning the research paper I had written on Neuropsychology.

I looked at the application as a place to showcase my accomplishments and did so--diverse as they were. Instead, I should have tried to make the application more cohesive--it should NOT have introduced my work in Neuropsychology.

To top the already imbalanced application, my two best letters of recommendation came from a Physiology teacher at the local JC and an AP Psychology teacher. These two BOTH discussed my Neuropsycholgy research :-/. This furthered the awkwardness of my app, as I didn't have a physics or a chemistry teacher to portray my great involvement in Alternative Energies.

I think I could still have gained EA admission with BioE had I just downplayed the work I've done on Neuropsychology. Admits and Students, correct me if I'm wrong but such a diversified application doesn't take you places.

Anyway, I'm told that I still have a chance at RD. I'm hoping to add letters of recommendation from a physics teacher at my HS and a chemistry professor at the JC (who knew about my Alternative Energies research). In addition, I'll add a long letter discussing the disparity and providing a context--maybe downplaying my Neuropsychology research. (Is this a good thing to do?)

Would appreciate any suggestions admits and students can provide.

Thanks!

As you can see Kithburd, my research really hasn't helped me. It has, I believe, shunted my application.

I lost my hook! Can someone please find it...
http://www.spookshop.com/images/bodyparts/stump_hook.jpg

Zking, are you Thomas Edison's clone?

Haha...LOL--I wish! Then again, he didn't even get into MIT ;)

I guess I have started on his path... Only 1080 patents to go!

Actually, I would probably be at nearly twice the number, had patenting not been SO expensive. One thing I learned, through MIT OCW, is that I can patent an invention anywhere in the world and the US will recognize the patent and the IP. As a result, in the future I can save TONS of money by patenting in foreign countries and having the US "acknowledge" the patents.

Everybody on this forum must have cheated at life. I'm having a hard enough time keeping an A- average, participating in a few clubs, and holding my band together...All i can say is i'm glad you guys all applied this year, maybe next year, i won't have to compete with the next edison and a fusion reactor.

My most unique hook? I'm me. :).

You, of course, have to meet me in order to understand.

My hook? I'm into math and science. Punks.

well i really comparatively have nothing here, but im getting my associate's degree with an emphasis in math in may, and my high school diploma in june, problem is that its just killed my gpa (3.6)

Wow - you guys all cap me in ECs. Seeing the stuff you guys have been doing makes me feel kinda useless. Lol.

Spartan you got in. Nothing else matters.

lol.

mit=life?

OR

mit>life?

life? what life?

:)

LeMoNhEaD- There are definitely some normal non-superhumans at MIT. I was really involved with a lot of things in HS, but I never designed my own nuclear reactor or anything remotely close to it, and I'm doing OK. Well, 18.03 is hard... but mostly I'm OK. So don't worry too much. =)

Just for clarification:

Whyme! is my mom -- for all of you wondering why zking786 responded under whyme!'s profile (in Entry #70), I must have forgotten to sign out of her profile and responded using her ID.

Sorry for the confusion!
