I love everything about NYU. I am a senior in high school planning on applying ED. However, I did some research on their social scene and I am a little nervous about it and thinking of reconsidering applying ED. I know NYU is not a traditional university, but does it still have a college feel? Is it easy to make friends with other students? Also, I want to be in greek life but have found it is known for not being very into it, is that true? I also am looking forward to the party scene in college. I know I’m not paying to party, but for the amount Id have to pay I want to have fun while I do it. So how much partying is there on campus? I know there is lots to do off campus because its NYC but it would be hard for me to pay for. So are there often form or frat parties, and are the big. I know there won’t be tailgates and all that but is it traditional at all in the party sense besides that? Is the social scene comparable in any way to schools like Umass amherst, UNH, Uconn, etc? Thank you!
NYU does not have a traditional campus. While the ‘center’ of NYU may be considered around Washington Square Park, the campus extends for blocks and blocks and some buildings are even in Brooklyn a subway ride away. Among urban campuses it is on the least ‘campusy’ end. GW and BU, both urban, would have more of a campus feel and more green space. Much of the social scene at NYU takes place in NYC, not necessarily on ‘campus’. Will not be comparable to UNH, UCONN or UMASS social scene at all.
You won’t have any trouble finding friends, although it may require slightly more effort than a traditional college. Hell, I don’t even live anywhere near campus and I found my “squad” within a few months.
I know that ~20% of the student population is affiliated with a fraternity/sorority, which is still a decent amount. I can’t personally say much about the party scene, but if I had one dollar for every time I heard a fellow student brag about how wasted they got after a wild Friday night rooftop party, well, I wouldn’t have to worry about paying tuition anymore.
