What is the opinion of colleges when applicant writes an essay on race and identity?

Well, for all those “who are you” type topics, I feel I could write a pretty good essay on my racial identity and such. I’m one of those Asians that can’t speak Chinese, have only white friends, and go to a public school that’s mainly black or white. Is writing about this type of thing too cliche or not well liked by colleges?

I really don’t want to write about some phony baloney trip or something like that.

Anyone have any thoughts?

A few points:

1.) If you are of Asian descent, then you won't get an advantage for your racial background, so it won't detract by showing that it was not a handicapping factor when coming to admissions.

2.) By making yourself look mainstream, you could look bland to the admissions officers.

3.) When choosing a topic, remember the following:
a. Will it show the officers who you are.
b. Will it present you in a positive light.
c. Will it make you look unique.
d. Is is something that you feel passionate about.

If so, than the topic is probably inconsequential. Race won't be a factor anyway, so use it if it fills the above conditions.

c. Will it make you look unique.

what does "unique" mean?

Many colleges recieve thousands of applicants, and can only choose a small percentage of them. You want an essay that can let them distinguish from the crowd.

For this case, an essay about race and identity could have a unique feeling in describing the writer, or it could be a stereotypical writing about discovery, feeling out of place, blah blah blah.
