What is the overall opinion of Vandy?

Is it a good school? Internationally recognized? Worth the money? Generally speaking will going to Vandy benefit me in any direction I choose to go in the future?

On a side note too fellas, how does it compare to other private southern schools like Rice or Emory? I know Duke surpasses it but what about the other two I listed?

i hear its like the "false elite" school. That people just party and do drugs.

oh great. Is has faux prestige? I figured it was like a Rice or Emory? Supposedly its ranked higher than both in most rankings like US News (-Rice), Times Higher Ed, Newsweek global Universities, and Shanghai Jaio.

i don't know, dont take just my word, thats just the opinion of one area.

anyone else?

Vandy students could be just a notch less solid academically than Rice's and on par with Emory's ones. Vandy's name-recognition is better (though people in-the-know know theese schools are peers). Social life is better at Vandy but it is not all parties and drugs.

It depends on where you are probably. In the south Vanderbilt has very good brand recognition, but in other areas Emory probably carries more weight. They are tied in US News, but Vanderbilt is known more for sports whereas Emory is known more for academics. Rice is very well known in Texas but that's about it.

Since I am from Texas I know that Rice is treated with Ivy status here. Rice grads get treated like butter alongside Yale and Cornell grads. When I visited Mass. and told some people, including some Harvard advisors about Rice, they werent impressed in the least.

I had never even heard of Emory until a friend of mine got in. But I am surprised that Vanderbilt maintains such a record of prestige over the other two peers, when supposedly Rice is better and Emory is equal. IMO Rice and Vandy are tied as equal, while Vandy is better than Emory. But that is my perspective after reading all of the schools stats.

ruben,
You've been asking about these schools for months on these boards. Rice, Emory and Vanderbilt are all terrific schools and all compare well with the lower level of the Ivies and Rice even more so (though some Northeasterners would likely not accept that). Anyway, they all offer great, but different experiences. Don't get too hung up on whether Vanderbilt might be a top 10 school in a decade. It really doesn't matter. What matters is the fit. You can be very successful from all three as you can from a great many schools.

Vandy is flippin' awesome. Then again, I live half an hour away. Honestly, though, Vandy is a great school. Faux prestige doesn't exist. You have to have the qualifications to get in. You're going to get stoners and frat parties at nearly every school.

A few years ago, Vandy hired one of the highest-profile presidents in the country away from Brown, and their visibility and reputation has soared ever since. In 10 years, I'd anticipate its stock to be even higher.

My daughter graduated from Vandy two years ago with BS and MS in engineering. She is working for one of the top management consulting firms. Her cohort of friends are very happy with their Vanderbilt education, having graduated from top law and graduate schools, several working in financial services, another as a radio broadcaster. Nashville is a fun town and Vandy a great school, but the friendships you make are priceless.

I actually live in suburban Connecticut and most people at my high school seem to understand that Vandy is an excellent school, just a tad below Duke and on par w/ Emory and WUStL.

On par with Emory and WUStL? What about Rice?

Personally, however much I dislike ranking colleges, I would put Rice a tad above Vandy.

I figured Vandy was tied with Rice as second to Duke. Rice just being a notch above Vandy. I've noticed though that Vandy seems to command more international recognition in the international rankings.

Its a fine school. Recognized and solid. I just choose ND over it because I felt Vanderbilt was'nt really for me. Not that it should deter you from going...

I also like that its rising in ranks every year or so. Gordon Gee must be doing some great things over there.

It's odd. In the North, Vanderbilt seems to be perceived as this conservative very Southern school, where athletics are big. In the South, it has been perceived as a fairly liberal school, a bit Yankeefied, no rah-rah spirit, with a lot of academically oriented kids. The truth in actually a very healthy and pleasant inbetween. Most students would find a sizeable nitch where they would fit in there. Nashville has gone from something of a minus to a bona fide plus. Vanderbilt is not sleepy. Most schools of its academic quality are not as socially oriented. To the extent students have problems there, it is a matter of them finding a lot on their plates academically and socially at the same time.

Why does everybody on CC kiss up to Rice? It's solid, on par with Emory, but it's not a lower level ivy. It just isn't.
