My current high school does not party that much so I want a university where that scene exists. Is it hard to find parties or are they always going on? Is it mostly centered around Greek life? Or is it pretty dead? Also, how is the party scene at Oxford?
Emory is a fit-for-you school. If you don’t want to party, it isn’t hard to stay away. However, there is ALWAYS a party somewhere on the weekends at Emory. Most of it is centered around Greek life (frat parties are up all the time, we just had a heaven/hell themed frat party this past weekend), but sometimes they aren’t. You get fliers for parties around Atlanta which are usually pretty fun (from my experience). People at Oxford usually take the free Emory shuttle to the Atlanta and partake in either the frat parties or the unaffiliated parties around ATL. Any time you need a party scene, there will always be one every weekend.
I’m a parent, but the Oxford campus seems quiet to me. It wouldn’t be a good fit for someone who wants a lot of big parties.
Party scene at Oxford is nonexistent. It’s just people drinking in dorms there. The Atlanta campus always has something going on.
If you’re going to school to party and wind up at Emory, you may wind up kicking yourself for your choice of school (and not picking Tulane or U of Miami). As mentioned above, the fraternities can be a center of social life.
My son is a freshman at Emory and his social life is not lacking. Kids go to frats to party and bars when there aren’t parties to go to. As a freshman boy you do have to be invited to attend the parties but my son and his friends have not had a problem getting invited. He does say that you don’t choose Emory to party. Academics come first at Emory but he’s definitely out Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
Pretty much agree with above, but, as a parent of a sophomore who is in a fraternity, the experience isn’t going to parties three times a week and parties and social life aren’t going to come to you. You have to seek it out. If it’s going out three times a week, maybe some nights are at casual restaurants. As they say, “your mileage may very” and much depends on the person and the major and if you have a significant other on campus.
Freshmen are not allowed to have cars on campus and many sophomores in fraternities do have them and provide “support” to recruits. Many of those same sophomores look to live away from the fraternity houses and off campus when they’re upperclassmen. It’s an interesting dynamic, but fraternities are not for everybody.
My son definitely hasn’t had a hard time finding parties all 3 nights with lots of “darties” in the nice weather. If there isn’t a party many of the kids go to Maggie’s. They’ve also gone to clubs in Buckhead. The only Thursdays he’s stayed in have been ones where he has a Calc test in the am.
