why is drinking alcohol (and excessive amounts of it) so commonplace these days? what's the point and what good can come out of it?

It is done so one can relax and have fun, lowered inhibitions are good

so u can talk to girls who u normally wouldn't talk to

so you can make ugly people pretty

So you can hang out with the "cool" kids because usually they do it, and you want to seem "cool" in their eyes and be accepted.

Stereotyping is also cool and only done by cool kids

It's kinda fun...you should try it sometime...seriously.

Just get some wine coolers, get a friend or two to go to your house, and give it a try. Just experience it. Don't give into peer pressure, or get drunk all the time, but it is kinda fun to do it every once in a while just to feel less inhibited.

After 35 beers or so you should cut yourself off, trouble remembering things sometimes. Remember any morning you wake up and don't see bars in front of you is a good day.

so u can watch the Statue of Liberty take her clothes off. Well at least it happened in Family Guy.

It's fun. Really fun. This question is obviously coming from someone who has never tried it before, so I'd have to say just try it for yourself so you don't have to rely on the inadequate descriptions of others. It's not going to kill you or make you stupid, don't worry about it.

my roommate and I both come from very moral asian families and this is our first year being around drunk people. We both agree to just get drunk together this summer when she visits me.

I'm getting some Absinth with a few friends in a few weeks. That stuff gets you drunk and makes you hallucinate like crazy (the kind we're getting). It's going to be mad awesome, we're just going to sit in a room and listen to Pink Floyd all night.

I'm so paranoid about getting alcohol in my body. AHHHH :(

For me it all depends who you're with when you're drinking...if you're with a someone you like or a date it's a great way to loosen up. I think being a little 'free' is much better than being drunk to the point you can't walk...but hey that's just me.

You will laugh your ass off first time you get drunk. Maybe end up kissing another girl, or hooking up with some random guy. Be sure you stay in a group, so no moron tries to take advantage of you.

i don't think i'll ever give in to the influence any time in the near future nor am i saying that i will stay alcohol free forever (and i will decide for myself, of course)... but for now, i just want to hear the opposing side.

because everyone else is doing it. and because after you're hammered (this is for the ladies), the words "lets make our own Girls Gone Wild video with my dad's video camera" don't seem so stupid.

If you need alchohol as a crutch to "exude coolness" I think, no wait, I know, that you're pathetic.

because its social etiquette. all of us will soon realize tht more u drink in college, more friends u'll have (i hope...)

Some people enjoy drinking and others don't. You will most likely try it some day, but there is no need to feel you need to seek it out unless you really want to. Once you do try, you might enjoy, or you may decide it's not for you, and there is nothing wrong with that. A lot of people don't like alcohol because they don't like feeling like they have lost any control; control freaks who like to always be in control of everything. Once again, nothing wrong with that.
Unfortunately, many who have never tried alcohol and then get to college and go off the deep end getting way too drunk, sick, doing things they are embarrassed of, etc. If you do decide to drink, go slowly the first time so you can monitor how quickly you get drunk and stop when you feel happy but before you are sick. Then, you will begin to know your personal tolerance (how many drinks it takes you to get how drunk). Also, I wouldn't suggest mixing drinks. If your drinking beer, stick with beer, if wine, stick with wine, if gin, stick with gin. Nothing will make you sicker than mixing.
