What is the real cost of going to CMU?

What is the cost (per year )of going to cmu after tuition room, and board, aid (family income 100K) , and scholarship(normal student)?
How much does it hurt you in getting aid if you applied for ED rather than regular decision?

~50k will be the cost. To find your aid just use one of the EFC calculators on Finaid.org [FinAid | Calculators | Expected Family Contribution (EFC) and Financial Aid](<a href=“Your Guide for College Financial Aid - Finaid”>http://www.finaid.org/calculators/finaidestimate.phtml) I really think ED won’t affect your aid. It’s just that you run out of choices if they decide to screw you over with aid.

Is there any way to predict the merit scholarships you would be offered?

Cost of Attendence: CMU’s estimate is about right. Some savings can be had by choosing triple or quad living arrangements or maybe off campus. Additional savings by not using the meal plans and budgeting when and how you eat.

for financial aid, CMU does not recommend ED if financial aid is a deciding factor.

I don’t know if they still have freshmen in the Oakland apartments, but my son was placed there and was allowed to use the commuter food plan which saves a lot of money. However his rooming situation was one of the more expensive ones. (He had - and still has a huge one bedroom apartment by college dorm standards.) If you do want a cheaper housing option, be sure to sign up as soon as possible.

way too much!!! they dont give out a lot of merit scholarships, (bc every1 is so smart)

I got a few merit scholarships when I was at CMU. Even wound up scoring one for $2k a semester from my department.

If you’re looking to save money, move off campus ASAP. Cheap housing can be had in Squirrel Hill, Oakland, or (sometimes) Shadyside, and you’re never more than a fairly quick bus ride away. Also, make sure your kid learns how to cook. $5 a meal sounds like a great deal at first (at least compared to campus food), but then you realize you can only eat lunch at Subway and Orient Express so many times.
