What is the recommended length of the personal statement?

Any information about this essay is a little vague. About how much should I have for it? Is it more of a short statement or a full-length essay?

if i remember correctly. my daughter is a freshman industrial design major in DAAP. she did a 250-300 word essay. i believe the max was 500 words but i could be wrong. it tells you in the common ap.

actually i just located her essay on my computer. it was 342 words.

I am a freshman this year at UC. The max was 500, I believe. You can write as much or as little in that range of words as you wish, but they care more about the quality and uniqueness of your essay as opposed to just the length. If you can write a great essay, but only use 300 words, don’t just add stuff to make it more lengthy. They use this essay to get to know you more and to decide whether or not you have qualities that they think would fit with UC. Personally, I had trouble keeping my essay within that limit (due to the subject I was writing about and how much I had to say about it) and my main problem was trimming my essay down. So don’t worry so much on the length and just make sure to have it reviewed multiple times. Good luck!

After pasting my 400-word essay into the Common App, it said that the word limit was ~250~ words! That’s far less than any of you have said, and shortening it seems like a nightmare. :frowning:

Supplemental essay/ personal statement has a 250 word max.

The same thing happened to me! I wrote a little under 500 words and had to cut it in half.
