I’m from California and was recently accepted to UVM. I applied there as a safety because it is a beautiful campus with a good sized student body and a great college city, but I don’t know much about the reputation of the school. What are some of the schools that UVM is compared to? How is UVM thought of in comparison to other state schools on the east coast?
I’m a former Californian (Westlake Village / Ventura County) and now a dad living in Boston with a S who was accepted by UVM.
UVM has a very solid reputation in the Northeast. It is not a Berkeley or UCLA, but one of the other solid UC System schools. Here the overlap seems to be UMass and then a bunch of other smaller liberal arts schools scattered throughout New England and NY State.
Undergrad business school has a good reputation here in Boston for sure. I also know that Rubinstein is absolutely top notch. My son’s high school sends several students there each year and they all seem to love it very much. Burlington is a great little town…it has amenities far beyond its size. The school seemed very relaxed; students were incredibly friendly. There is a strong outdoorsy vibe to the place. If you like skiing, hiking, etc. it’s a wonderful place to be.
In the end, my son is not going to attend; he has decided he wants to be in a big city. But my 16 year old will very likely end up there in two years.
Best of luck!
In CT - UVM has a strong reputation for journalism, environmental science, pre-law and pre-med. It’s reputation seems to be growing immensely here. Much of it has to do with the campus and town and the additional housing for freshman recently constructed. It also has a reputation for being a very LIBERAL school. I agree with @SwimmingDad that it is a very outdoorsy, friendly place with an appeal for just about any personality. I also agree that in the Northeast it seems to be an attraction to the private high school kids and competes with UMASS Amherst, UCONN and some of the competitive private liberal arts colleges. It seems to be a safety for the kids applying to BC, Providence, Northeastern, College of the Holy Cross and Wesleyan. Hope this helps
