what is the social life at mac?

I'm very interested in Macalester, but have not yet visited, so all I know about it is what is found on the website and such. What is the social life like there? What do people do on the weekends? I noticed there is no Greek life there.

I actually just got back from a visit, so I don't go there yet. But I will say from what I experienced, the social life is incredible.

I flew in Thursday night and a group called Fresh Concepts, which does comedy theatre, was having an event called "24 Hours of Improv" so I watched that for a few hours, then went back to my hotel for the night.

Friday night I stayed in the dorms and that was an absolute blast. I got there at 5 and first we watched an episode of 24 with a few other people. Then ten of us went out for Thai food just down the block. After that my host had a "date" of sorts so I was left with other people and I ended up hanging out for a while before heading to a jazz concert on campus featuring a Minneapolis band and the Mac Jazz Band. After that I went out for coffee with these people, then we came back, hung out some more, then headed over to the Mac Grille where people ate a few things, then back at the dorms a guy hosted a tea party. I must mention at this point that even in freshman dorms, alcohol is readily available. After the tea party a group called KAADATT, "Kids All About Dancing All the Time" was hosting a dance so we went to that, then afterwards we pretty much just hung out and chilled. I only saw my host twice because we were hanging out with different people, and I ended up rooming with someone else. I didn't sleep until pretty far into the morning.

My point is that, at least on the weekends, there is an incredible variety of things to do. There was also a swim meet and an open latin dance lesson that evening that I could not make it to. Saturday night they were having a Mac Student Film Festival and a hip hop dance club show. Next weekend there is a theatre production called Saturday, Sunday, Monday and I met some people involved in that. Yes, the kids are smart, and they presumably work hard on the weekdays, but on the weekends they are just like other college students. If you want to study all the time there were a few kids like that, but overall Mac seemed to be filled with social people who just happened to be blessed with an intellect to supplement their other interests.
