In terms of academics, athletics, extracurricular activities, and social background, what is the typical candidate for the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy like? What is the typical GPA? How many AP courses did a typical candidate take? How many Varsity letters does a typical candidate have? What extracurricular activities does a typical candidate do?

For the class of 2010 85% earned varsity letters, 55% were team captains, 39% were class presidents or members of student government. Average SAT scores were 1213
(only math and verbal were considered.) Figure on 600 pts in each category. For a GPA I would say a 3.6 would be the minimum. Take as many AP classes as possible particularly if you have an opportunity to take AP calculus, AP chemistry and AP physics these classes are known as the “plebe killers.” For extra curricular activities sports and community service of any kind are helpful

I had a 3.6 unweighted gpa, stopped taking AP classes my junior year, 2 varsity letters, captain, NHS, eagle scout, average background, white male, 1190 SAts. Competition is pretty stiff for maritime states, but if your state isn’t on the water then it shouldn’t be too difficult getting in. I definitely agree with studying hard in physics, calc, and chem. They’re some of the harder courses you’d take here.
