It's ranked as one of the top programs, but I haven't seen much info on CC about the program. What are the professors like? How many students major in neuroscience? Can you choose a focus within the major? There's info on USC's site, but I want to get a student's perspective.

Thanks!

Neuroscience at USC is a challenging major which is exciting due to the tremendous advances in the field that have taken place in the last fifty years.

What is being studied?

Neuroscience at USC is interdisciplinary. Scientists are brought together to study a range of disorders, identify new approaches to examine nervous system function and learn about the underlying causes of neurological and psychiatric disorders.

Major Topics of Research:

Behavioral, Systems & Cognitive Neuroscience
Cellular & Molecular Neurobiology
Development, Plasticity & Repair
Computational Neuroscience & Neural Engineering
Aging, Neurobiology of Disease & Translational Research

Faculty

There are 60 neuroscience faculty. Perhaps the best known is Dr. Antonio Damasio and his wife, Dr. Hanna Damasio. Dr. Pat Levitt is the Director of the Silkha Institute. Among the most 100 highly cited neuroscience researchers are Larry Swanson, Michel Bordry and Richard Thompson. Other noted faculty are Michael Quick and Irving Biederman among others. Their resumes can be accessed on the USC neuroscience website.

Honors Program

USC offers an honors program for those students who wish to pursue the most challenging courses and research.

Study Abroad

In addition to the USC Study Abroad Programs the neuroscience major has opportunities to continue study in the field abroad.

Institutes

There are institutes which are research centers for advanced study in this field.

Some are:

Dornsife Cognitive Neuroscience Imaging Center
Brain and Creativity Institute
Program in Hearing and Communication Neuroscience
Broad Institute
Zilkha Neurogenetic Institute (In conjunction with the Keck School of Medicine)

For undergraduates the degree offered is a B.A. in Neuroscience.
