I think maybe you mean elite publics? I am aware of that but don’t accept it based on forums and anecdotal evidence, so I was hoping for an official reference.
Sorry fixed my typo.
I would just say I live in a neighboring state to Wisconsin and know a number of students who were surprisingly rejected from UW Madison. And UMN-TC for that matter.
I think taking the ACT a 2nd time is worthwhile. My daughter went from a 28 to a 32 without doing any additional prep work. She felt that she could pace herself a little better the 2nd time around and she also said that the reading passages on the 2nd attempt were much more interesting and made more sense to her. She said it all just “clicked” better. I’m sure it made a huge difference in the scholarships she obtained with very little extra effort.
Not sure where the “you need a 31 ACT to be accepted from OOS for UW-Madison” came from? D’s friend from CA just got accepted there and she took the ACT several times and best score was a 27. I think her uGPA was around a 3.5. Only hook is 1st Gen to attend college.
Unfortunately there is a lot of misinformation that is shared on CC.
@socaldad2002 that is what we were told. Of course, there are exceptions. Your friend’s D filled in a different piece of the class puzzle. And, if you are going to quote, you might want to actually use the right quote.
@alooknac past acceptance threads provided some insight as well as general research and extrapolation. I think this article is a pretty good summary of what has been happening over the last decade at UW. It’s easier to get into UW IS than OOS (with some exceptions) using some of these numbers as a guide. I don’t think an official reference exists.
^^ Let’s put it this way. Had she or her parents read your statement say last fall they may have erroneously thought that UW was out of reach because they were OOS and didn’t have anything close to these stats. We need to be careful about the type of information we share and coming across as authoritative when we really don’t know what OOS applicants really need to attend UW. CC is a great site for information on college admissions but at times is more speculative that having real concrete answers. Caveat emptor…
@socaldad2002 I think you overlooked the “tend to need”. It was stated as a general guideline. The only part of the comment that was definitive was the superscoring comment, which is on the UW website.
