What Is There Business Econ Major LIke?

I was just wondering, because I just started to take an intro to business class in my last semester of high school, and I love business. I never thought I would but I do, and it's too late to apply to other colleges to major in business, and since UCLA is the only school i put business econ as my secondary major, if I get in, i really really really wouldn't mind going there. But how good is it? is it close enough to the major business administration?

Because I would rather major in that since it's more business! I don't know.tell me kids!

What is their business econ major like?

Heres straight from UCLA:

Business Economic Major

The B.A. program offers a major for students seeking a business orientation in their study of economics. It does not replicate the traditional undergraduate business school curriculum. Instead, it offers a more tightly focused curriculum that is guided by the rigorous logic and integrative perspective of economics. It is designed to prepare students for graduate education in business, economics, and law. The program requires students to include specific courses offered by the department and the John E. Anderson Graduate School of Management.

So if you plan to go on and get your MBA, the business econ major will be okay. In fact, you probably could major in anything and apply for an MBA after four years.

You could also switch majors at your other schools. Berkeley's Haas School of Business offers a degree in business administration. You must declare that your junior year.

As EG mentioned already, you can change your major with very little difficulty. Don't feel locked into anything.

Well, a lot of majors at UCLA work like this--you're admitted into a pre-major (in this case pre-business economics) and once you fulfill the prerequisites for the major, you apply for admission into the official major.

There are a LOT of kids who enter UCLA as pre-bizecon, it seems like every other person you meet is doing it. HOWEVER, space in the major is limited--the UCLA biz-econ website states "demand for the major significantly exceeds space available." Thus, a good deal of people who enter UCLA as pre-bizecon either won't make it, or lose interest and switch out of it into a different pre-major.

So you can imagine, admission into biz econ is one of the most competitive in the college of L&S at UCLA. There is a formula called a "primary score," and you need to have a minimum primary score of 3.3 in order to be admitted. It mostly consists of your prerequisite GPA (weighted heavily) and your overall UCLA GPA (not weighted as heavily). The prerequisite courses are pretty competitive since most of the kids in it are aiming to get into biz-econ. Most people officially apply for the major in the latter part of their 2nd year or in the 3rd year.

This is just a caveat so that you know, even if you are admitted into UCLA as biz-econ, that doesn't mean anything yet.

It is the same in the poli sci dept and English majors; you must petition for admission once you fulfill the prerequisites.

Yes, it's actually that way for almost all the majors (except things like engineering, which is separate from the college of L&S). It's just that biz-econ is especially hard to gain admission into because of the high demand.

I'm a little confused, why would kids want to try to get into the Business Econ major at UCLA, what's so good about it? I would think that UCB Business major would be the way to go. In terms of careers with just an undergrad degree in business econ from UCLA what are your prospects? Or is it just a major that most pursue to later go on into grad school?

Because I just barely discovered a strong interest for business, and I don't plan to go on into grad school, so I assume where I get my undergrad degree will be very important, and I wish I would have applied to Berkeley when I had the chance too.

Do you guys think if I applied to berkeley for fall 2006 or spring 2006, I would still be able to go on into the path of a business major since like eiffel said you don't declare your business major at berkeley until your junior year?

Skipping a year is not suggested unless you plan to do something during that year. It is better to transfer.

A degree from UCLA in business econ is not bad and if you can get valuable work experience through internships (and do well in them) your degree should stand up to a Business Admin degree from Berkeley.

You don't know for sure yet; the average student changes their major 3-5 times. You might end up loving business and pursue an M.B.A.

By your logic, a Harvard degree would be better.

Though school reputation does matter, it is up to the individual to determine how well they will do in a career/field.

UCB Business Major is an awesome degree. But in truth, UCLA Business Econ would do just as good as UCB Biz for the job market.

You might, might get more benefits of doubts when you are trying to find a job in NY with biz degree, but if you are staying in Cali, no company will outright pick UCB biz over UCLA just because of the difference in degree.
