What is this business??

I applied to regular decission at howard and hampton last minute because the other schools that I had applied too were not exactly coming back as planned (I think I aimed a little high haha) I ended up being accepted to Howard, Hampton, Texas Tech, Northeastern, and Saint Louis..

I go to a very competitive catholic school and had a 3.2 gpa, 1810/2400 sat, and lots of extracurriculars..

Howard and hampton were basicly supposed to be my backups incase I didnt get any big scholarships from the other schools which i didnt but now I didnt get a scholarship from howard or hampton.. hampton's reasoning was that they mainly only gave money to early action kids because they dont have much to give and funds had all ready been depleted... howard said that I didnt have a high enough gpa to qualify.. they said that my gpa was weighted and that my real gpa (to them) was not high enough.. they do not give extra consideration to advanced ap classes which ive been in 3 since starting high school, or ap classes, I am in calculus.. this comes as a slap in the face because my school encourages us to take ap classes and make the lower grade because you are more challenged that way.. and howard is saying basicly that I would have been better off making straight a's in regular classes?? does anyone have any insight, or a similar situation?

thanks

p.s. im most likely going to howard regaurdless at this point but i just really wanted that scholarship because thats just extra money in my pocket..

Who did you speak to? I can't believe that Howard is encouraging that we do the bare minimum in order to get higher grades to be eligible for a scholarship. There is definitely something wrong here.

I applied to Howard early action, was accepted in December and have yet to hear from them regarding a scholarship. My stats meet the requirements for a Legacy Scholarship, I have been accepted to Colgate, Brandeis, Villanova and other schools with grants or merit scholarships, but have yet to hear from my #1 school Howard University about a financial package. What gives?

Hey SAgregg002,
Am surprised at why you didnt get any money at howard(what where your combined critical reading and math scores?) and about your cumulative GPA, i think you were still eligible because according to their website; the legacy scholarship requires a 3.00 gpa and sat scores ranging from 1170-1290....and this covers tuition and fees (heres the URL http://www.howard.edu/financialaid/grants_scholarships.htm#Freshman)

I am also surprised on the speed at which you were notified that you were not receiving a scholarship because they dont sit for awarding scholarship decisions for regula decision applicants till may... When exactly where you notified on your admission decision and how exactly did you become aware that you were not going to receive a scholarship?

xavier9891,
wat where your stats (combined critical reading and math especially)? and do you know why you haven't been informed about a scholarship decision yet?

I have a 3.6W GPA, 640CR/630M/650W
Applied EA
I am not sure what the hold up is.

That's quite strange...am a bit confused myself! have you gotten the admission packet...and didn't they mention anything about giving you a scholarship? or have they informed you about awarding a scholarship at a latter date?

I have tried to contact them re: scholarship, but connot get through on phones. they replied to an email that I sent and said that I would be considered but that was a month ago. I received the acceptance in Dec., no scholarship yet.

I go to Howard on the legacy, don't be surprised if you don't get a scholarship from Howard even if u meet the stats for their scholarship!! I know kids in the honors programs who didn't get a scholarship and kids who are not in the programs who did, such as myself (3.7gpa/2000sat/29act). I didn't find out about my scholarship till I came back from spring vacation, that was the final week of April, application mailed on February 11th (procrastinator). Hold on a bit longer, if it doesn't happen HU is still a fantastic school that is very inexpensive compared to its neighbors and there are lots of opportunities for more scholarships in the years to come from the school.

Chieftain, you were right. I got a call yesterday and I 'm getting the scholarship. I consider it a great accomplishment.
Tell me about Howard. What's your major? I'm considering majoring in Political Science. Do you know anything about that department?

Have been waiting here too....congrats xavier9891!!! my stats: SAT 1900 GPA-3.5w and I am an international student. My getting a scholarship is contigent on my coming to howard! Xavier9891..who do you contact concerning the scholarships in howard.

Okay sorry I havent replied on this in a while.. I just came back from visiting Howard (showing up in person seems to be the only way to contact the administration hah) and it was interesting.. better than I expected it to be so I am content with that.. now I spoke with the scholarship director who told me that when you have a weighted gpa such as mine they use some formula (an arbitrary one in my opinion being that he did not share with me the criteria for said formula) for balancing out the gpa into a Howard gpa, renduring me ineligable for the scholarship based on my (hu) gpa. He said though that after your first year there they give out scholarships to those that have shown promise in the amounts of full or half tuition only.. so I will just have to excel and prove to them that I should have gotten a scholarship to begin with.. also he gave me information about the individual donor scholarship application whcih is now available so get on that if you're still after some money(they wont be awarding them until late july early august I was told though).. congrats xavier9891 on the scholarship and good luck to you tuoyo00.. are you guys in the 'Howard class of 2011' group on facebook? if not join and hit me up

yope yope....so the chapter has ended...Bad news is that I dint get the scholarship I wanted from Howard. but the Great news is that I got a better opportuinity for my field of study in another school with 'money'!...) Guess when one door closes, another opens!....aurevoir!
