I am a NY resident applying to SUNY schools, and I am a little bit confused about the "Communications & Media" label used in most of the SUNY schools. I am looking at New Paltz at the moment and it does not use the words film, or cinematography to name it's majors. I feel this, "Communications & Media" has more to with journalism (which i have no interest in). Am I wrong in this belief?

Also, I am certain SUNY Oneonta has a film production program because I seached through the courses.

So which is best for cinematography, New Paltz or Oneonta?

I really want to pursue a career in film production, thank you.

I don’t know if this is true for the SUNY schools, but usually when a school has a Media/Communications major, you can pick a certain concentration such as broadcasting journalism, journalism, radio, and film

or sometimes it’s what they call the film studies/film production major… it varies depending on the school

For example, my son was in the Scripps College of Communication, which included the following schools:
* The E.W. Scripps School of Journalism
* The J. W. McClure School of Information and Telecommunication Systems
* The School of Communication Studies
* The School of Media Arts and Studies
* The School of Visual Communication

He was in the School of Media Arts and Studies, which included the following majors:
* Music Production
* Audio Post Production
* Digital Media: Special Effects, Games, and Animation
* Management
* Media Studies
* Video Production

He graduated with a B.S. in Video Production from the School of Media Arts and Studies.

Is “video” production equal to “film” production? These days, most everything is digital, and that’s what the video production sequence is. My son also took some courses in the Film program, just so he could learn about shooting and cutting film, as well as using all digital tools. He graduated in 2009 and already has his own successful visual effects business for the film and television industry.

Hope that clears it up some.

digmedia, I think most of the time video production has more to do with digital cinema. I have no problem with digital, and it’s really either or for me when it comes to film and digital.

I was looking at the college of Liberal arts & Sciences at New Paltz and the site says this about the Communication & Media department:

“The Department of Communication and Media is one of the largest academic departments on campus, with more than 500 majors in Communication, Journalism, Public Relations, and Electronic Media Production or Management.”

There’s more but it doesn’t seem to talk much about video production for cinema. The School of Fine & Performing Arts doesn’t even have a film program but, it has photography.

I could have sworn New Paltz had a film program, does anyone know if it does? I just want to make sure because I have been hearing that it is a hot school right now. I have other colleges in my list that i’m thinking of applying to (mostly SUNY) but I want to make sure New Paltz has what I want, first.

Why don’t you call their admissions office and ask. They can probably clear it up for you.
