What, exactly, IS “the core?” I’m confused… Is it like CGS? Is it just one class? Basically, if I apply for “the core,” what is going to happen? I am an undecided major in CAS with interest in philosophy, film and theatre… will “THE CORE” prevent me from taking what I would like to take?

Also… I’ll use this opportunity to ask a few more questions… How does signing up for classes work? When will I need to do this? Also, how does one go about transferring into the school of fine arts… the theatre program… freshman year? How hard is this going to be? How many theatre classes can I take if I don’t major in theatre?

Most people do not take core. As far as I know, you can take any combination of sections (Natural Science, Humanities I, Humanities II, Social Science). To receive combination prerequisite credit, you must complete both semesters of the core section.

You do NOT have to take the Core nor is it suggested.

It is a specific program that appeals to certain kids who are inclined toward the Core type of program. It involves a small subset of the student body that sign up for it. Some kids love it. Read about it. Seems to be an old type of standard classic liberal arts program.

As far as signing up for classes, this was discussed on a previous thread, basically when you attend orientation you will meet individually with your advisor. The advisor's job is to get to know you well, your aspirations, what requirements, if any, are necessary for your program, etc. They will help you sign up each semester so you make good choices and don't get off track if there are specific requirements. (like pre-med)

BU allows for a fair amount of movement between programs so you aren't stuck the way you can be at some schools. Most class choices are available via on line registration but in the beginning there is more hand holding from the Advisor and he/she must always "sign off" on your choices each semester. There are variations depending on your major or undecided status. The orientation in the summer will help you make sense of all of this and you will receive periodic mailings in the summer that help answer many questions. Continue to surf the BU web site too since there is a ton of info there.
