What is this craze over UCLA?

Hey guys, I'm a bit surprised to find that many of you state UCLA as your "dream school", "#1 choice", and denote Irvine as "2nd choice".

Just what exactly do you guys like about UCLA? The westwood location? The top 25 school rank? The great undergrad programs? Fantastic food?

I personally really want to attend UCLA because it's located in LA. I wish to pursue a career of model management / broadcast journalism, thus I view the big city as an interactive playground full of new innovations.

What about you?

irvine is an awesome school as are just about every school in the UC campus but UCLA is my dream for a couple reason, many you listed above; location, prestige, rank, food, atmosphere.

however, i'd love being at irvine, too and i won't be very dissapointed wherever i end up.

uhm. duh. cafeteria food.

As a current UCLA student, I would just like to say that the Mexican food in Rendezvous is delish...but it just need to be accompanied by Rieber's churros. Period.

However, I really like how UCIrvine is in the suburbs. Less congestion!

In my opinion, all UC cafeteria food are the same. I've visted UCB, UCSD, UCLA and UCSB and honestly.... you get used to them over time. Its like an equilibrium kinda thing, you know? Eat good food for a quarter, it'll become medicore. Eat mediocre food for a quarter, well you adjust to it. To the OP, i think you would prefer UCLA better because, yes, the Westwood location is just bustling like a downtown city should.

HOWEVER, there are many perks that UCI have over UCLA. Because i come from west San Jose (living in a tiny 1 million dollar house is considered 'average', asians everywhere, night life sucks), UCI was a smooth transition for me. Its a bubble basically. The worst crime you'll see is probably some drunken college students. The environment is calm and sunny, the people here are chill as f***, competition is extremely lax (compared to my H.S, lol), but you still get all the priorities and nuances of college life. I guess i was just a little shocked and felt pretty insignificant or overwhelmed when i visited UCLA, but hey, thats just me. Bottom line is, whatever college you go to, learn to take what it has to offer you. The more you take the more you will see how awesome and friggen cool your college is. Hell, UCI doesnt even have a football team, yet i proclaim, ZOT ON

yeeahh **** that was a long post

Admirable post my good sir.

very good post. i <3 irvine. i really like the chill atmoshpere and have come to know amazing people.

i would love it at irvine.

i just need to get in first.

Hey "I love ants" I come from the south bay too, and I just got into UCI as a transfer student! Any advice about socialy life, housing, ANYTHING?
And as a response to the thread: I have also heard that the city of Irvine is a great place for internships! I know people that go to UCLA and comute to Irvine to intern there. In any case, there are pros and cons to both schools :)

Since you're a transfer student, you WILL find yourself a little out of place. A lot of people will know one another already since they've been here for two years. I've already met a few transfers myself, and I've befriended them. Try your hardest to get involved in clubs or just say hi and shake the hands of the person sitting next to you. Irvine seems very academic sometimes. Most people like to study and study alone (from what I've seen in the lower division classes). As for housing, you'll be paying up the ass since Irvine is expensive. You'll definitely have fun if you make it fun. I hope to see you around!

Rofl, yeah basically what jas0n is all true. You hear it all the time but its what you gotta do. to meet people you go to clubs.. etc (i actually found one of my roommates for next year in a club, we share nearly all same interests it was freaky). And yeah, i guess Irvine and its outlaying cities are great for internships. Go to Newport Beach/Costa Mesa... and there are a ton of corporate offices i see/hope myself working at in a few years.

UCI is pretty chill if u haven't lived in irvine ur whole life ^^;;; the fact that everything looks so prissly clean and perfect starts to get on ur nerves. And don't even make me start on the ppl. Some r pretty cool, but others...omg...they make u wanna bash ur head into the wall. spoiled spoiled rich brats. serious. But all the same, UCI has pretty decent dorms, bad food (from what i've heard), and well, itz the only UC in the OC. UCLA has very good food.

i live about 15 minutes from UCI. you can see the hill i live on from the campus. its a great school with a lot of potential. the school itself is really bolstering its academics and coming into its own. and the girls in orange county>anywhere else =P

You'll notice UCI feeling more "academic" than other schools. When I mean academic, I don't mean you'll be finding prodigees all over campus. This is highly due to the apathetic and chill atmosphere. Most people take UCI as a place to learn and get their degree. To further explain this, if you think about UCD you will think of a homey college-town feeling. If you look at UCLA, you might feel a more party type atmosphere. Something along those lines.

Yup, the surroundings around the UCLA campus is awesome. If you want social fun and nightlife, it's right there. Public transportation is great there also and is highly used. If you want a competitive school environment, this school certainly fits the bill also. I'm seriously considering UCLA for grad school. I like UCLA.

I like UCLA.

I love UCLA for its traffic.

Joking aside, what about school pride!? What about seeing your school on national tv? A decent football and basketball team would be nice.

About food... I've had food at LA, SB, Irvine, SD, and R. UCLA food is better than the rest. Though I'd say Irvine's food isn't bad either.

I like UCLA because...its in LA Irvine was my strong back up school because I've heard the campus is really nice, and that its been gaining reputation the past few years (The rankings for this school have climbed considerably) UCLA also has the prestige factor, and the fact that it fits my major considerably better.

irvine girls are HAWT!!!!!!!!!!
