What is this SSE internship that I just got a brochure for?

Some of the positions sound interesting, but I just wanted to hear what some of you students might have to say about the internships. Can a bunch of similar/better opportunities be found at the activities fairs?

The one person I know that did an SSE internship died a little bit inside after he was done with it. I think the one he did was selling ad space in unofficial guide or a similar book. They try and bribe you by saying you can make a huge amount of money, but usually there's only one or two kids every summer that make anything decent, and because I believe your almost entirely on commission, you'll have to work your butt off to try and make decent money.

I was a little wary of the pitches because they seemed to have an air of "too good to be true". I'm assuming that the internships are unpaid. Are there better business activities?

Yes, there are better, non-committing things you can do like BASES or FUSION or the fraternity AKPsi or other student groups. SSE sucks, one kid two years ago sold ads to real estate companies for huge amounts of money and then laughed as they slowly realized they just wasted it all since, of course, what need do we students have for million dollar homes? Since then, they've been trying to recruit people like mad with the notion that they're going to make lots of money, but the fact of the matter is that most people make jack off their commissions.

They were desperate enough in hiring this summer that they got a bunch of freshmen to lead the sales team. They made some really retarded decisions. I mean, they were nice people (for the most part), just inept (they chose to raise the cost of each ad to make up for the slack--and lost tons of customers).

Conclusion: don't bother.

So is the primary reason it "sucks" because you won't make a lot (if any) money? I don't really mind that as long as the time commitment isn't too big. Which brings me to my next question: anyone know how many hours a week this internship demands?

EDIT: just to make sure, this is the SSE "business internship program" we're talking about, right?

if it's the one that both I and jwj have been referring to, which is the one where you sell ad space (I don't know the exact name of the program), then it is a full-summer, 40 hour a week commitment. In other words it's a summer job.

docketgold, I don't think we're talking about the same things. This SSE business internship takes a few (12 I think) interns and has them work in various segments of SSE. Capgroup, as an example, is one of them.

Fair enough, I've never actually looked myself at any of the SSE programs, I've only heard horror stories from friends. Those alone have made me very wary of anything run by SSE.

The main reason it sucks is because you make little money AND it drains your time. I mean, come on, give us some credit, if we'd heard it's worth the time and effort, we would've said so. We're not just being jaded, we're telling you exactly what we've heard from friends who've worked for SSE.

As a general whole, SSE is going right down the gutter. The executive team isn't very good at managing people (they just yell at their directors, I had a friend who was one for 3 months, it wasn't exactly pleasant), people often lie to scrape a few sales, and I have yet to hear a single good thing about anything they do. Try it out if you'd like, who knows, maybe it'll be different by some magical way, but you have been warned. This is a group that tried frantically to hire new salespeople in the middle of summer because most of them said &*$% it and quit.

I more than believe you both. Case closed, for me at least. Thanks. I didn't want to do a three page app this week anyway.
