What is this?

So I'm heading into 11th grade and just finished French 3... So does that mean I only have 2 years of foreign language? Because I took French I in 8th grade, which wasn't high school. Im basically asking would colleges take into account that I took 3 full years, and not 2?

You’ve only taken 2 years of HS French, even if you’re in French 3. French I doesn’t count if you took it in 8th grade.

Discuss this with a UDub admission officer when you visit. I suspect they’ll say “You placed out of French 1 as a freshman? Excellent. French 2 and French 3 are fine.”

PS, this won’t work if you got less than B’s in your French courses.

Im a confused,
okay I got a B and B- I think in French 1 (long time ago), I got a C+ and C in French 2 :(, then this year in French 3, I got a B, and B+

so what does this mean? Kind of confusing guys…

Sorry, I should have explained it better. Colleges want students who will succeed. Now there’s no magic formula to identify who will succeed and who won’t. So colleges make up a list of criteria that they hope will screen out those who won’t succeed. No HS degree? Bad. No math courses? Bad. No grade above D-? Bad. And then there are a few wishy-washy areas like four years of English, three years of science, three years of language (even if it’s Latin … I mean who speaks Latin?). Four years of PE? ***???

So you tell me Water, what’s better? Four years of French with a C- each year? Or two years of French with an A each year? Yeah, beats me too. But I can assure you that if the requirements for UDub say three years of language, and you have two years with iffy grades each year, that it will raise a question about your readiness for college. That’s all I was trying to say.

BTW, you’re not the only one with this issue. You might mitigate the issue with some carefully worded explanation … like “I placed out of French 1 as a freshman. Maybe that was a mistake as I struggled a bit with French 2. But I caught up in tenth grade and got a B+ in French 3.”

Good luck!

All right, that makes more sense…I think it’s possible for 12th graders to use language credits from 8th grade for colleges, but Ill definitely discuss this with my counselor when school starts.
