Hi guys. I am a senior who’s crazy about the University of Michigan. My gpa is 3.8 and my SAT score is a 1400. I took 7 APs so far. I have 2 extracurriculars and I was on my school’s tennis team (jv) for the past 3 years hoping to make it to varsity this year. I’m also a board member of the city’s volunteering department. I am an active member at school whether it’s a club, or any other event. Would Michigan accept me?
Nobody can answer that question for you. But you are in the range. Are you in state or out of state?
You should definitely apply early action.
UMich admits fourteen thousands undergrads per year. It’s not like there’s anything exotic & unique that these fourteen thousand people share.
Is that 1400 on a 1600 scale? What is your geographic location (state/country, area like Detroit/Flint)?
You can find the admission stat of incoming freshmen on their website. Your current GPA and score are both below the admission average but your course rigor is good.
You should re-compute your GPA using all “A”=4, all “B”=3 etc. for your academic classes . That is the GPA figure Michigan uses. Students who have a lot of A- grades get a boost under the UM system. In-state GPA and SAT/ACT scores are slightly below average but for engineering the median GPA and SAT/ACT are well above the university average.
As others have said, as long as your UM GPA is still high, you’re in their range. Your ECs are good.
There’s nothing that can guarantee you admission. If there was a magical formula, everyone would be at Michigan. UM, like any other good university, is looking for students they can be proud of when they graduate; students that will keep the image of UM high in the minds of people they meet or affect directly or indirectly. They want “well-rounded” students, but all that means is that you have passions outside of studying (which you do). Above all, they want students that want to be at UM. The best advice I was given and I can give is to really highlight why you want to be there. Everyone who applies wants to be there because the Ann Arbor is neat, because the academics are strong all across, because they have a high post-grad employment or grad school admission rate. They know this. They advertise this. What they want to know is why you truly want to be there. Is it because they’re research programs/opportunities are cutting edge? Is it because of a very specific professor that made you fall in love with the school?
Present yourself like the student they want, and I’d say you have a decent shot.
Hi guys I was wondering if a 3.6+ is good enough from in state? or does it have to be 3.7+?
@indianguy1 Well that depends on a lot of factors… It’s not as straight forward as “if you have above this GPA, then you’re good”. Ideally a 4.0 would be best, but the difference between a 3.6 and 3.7 can be made up for with your extracurriculars and essays. Just do as well as you can.
