What is UW like for non-commuter students??

I got accepted into UW today, and I live in Houston, Texas. I'm strongly considering UW for its awesome city and beautiful campus. However, I have heard that it is a commuter campus. How is it for a non commuter students who is staying on campus for the weekends? Are there activities going on or is it relatively quiet??

I live about 15 minutes east from Seattle and plan to commute just because it’s cheaper and more convenient (free food, laundry, cable, fast internet, more comfortable overall). But I’ve never heard UW be called a commuter school??? Greek life is decently popular, I know a lot of kids who graduated HS before me and are greek now, they love it. The dorms are also popular and busy. We also have the Ave full of cool little shops and restaurants which ALWAYS has students crowded on…plus a few homeless people haha

ALSO: Yes I would say there are always activities like clubs and intramural sports to be in. Also, we LOVE our football and basketball teams! They are a little above average and sometimes they do break the top 25 in rankings. Our women’s softball and volleyball are both recent national champs too I believe!

We have toured this campus and have friends who graduated from there. A beautiful campus that is not just a bunch of city blocks in downtown Seattle. It sounds like you have visited; UW is physically over a bridge from downtown, and in its own area. We saw some large dorms on the tour. I have been to commuter schools and this is not one of them.

My son was able to go back and hang out with some recent grads from our high school. They live on campus, and he never felt like he was in a commuter school during this second visit. If we could have figured out how to get their tuition down closer to our EFC (we are also OOS), then we would have applied.
