Im going to WFU this summer and i saw a lot negative comments about it's diverisity and some ignorant students so Im a bit of afraid. Im from a middleclass family in China but i don't think i fit the stereotype such as "short", "glass-wearing" and im open to integration. It's a school with great academic reputation so i chose to go. I think i know little about southern Americans scince the only Americans i see are nba stars, rap singers and friendly Texas farmers on TV so i think im unconsiously biased by media just like many Americans think we Chinese from Shanghai are 5 feet tall.
I think if i respect myself and prove i'm able to do everything well just like white and black and being open minded, willing to make friends out of my race, then people should respect me, am i too naive? Some people said minorities, especially Chinese are segregated in this school, but i think it's just because we Chinese are apt to gather and stick when we are abroad, not because of discrimination.

You should be fine! I read through some of the posts on the Wake Forest forum on College Confidential and I don’t think you have any reason for concern.
You may find yourself spending more time with other Chinese students since there is no language barrier and since you are all experiencing the same situation, but that is normal.
Keep an open mind and a friendly attitude. Also take advantage of the various services and programs WFU has specifically for international students [International Students & Scholars | Center for International Studies | Wake Forest University](Center for Immigration Sevices & Support - Center for Immigration Services and Support)
I think you will have a wonderful experience :-)

Thank you for your reply! BTW, I think if i speak english well without any accent it will be better for me and easier to be accepted by others, right?

You are going to find ignorant, biased people wherever you go. You’re also going to find friendly, accepting people. While you can’t completely avoid the former, you can choose to ignore them and associate with the people who value the wonderful qualities you bring.

Yes you are right. Just be myself and be happy.

Annasdad is 100% correct!
Don’t worry about the accent. Nice people will be curious about where you come from and will enjoy teaching you about America :-)

Wake Forest has plenty of International students, including ones from China, and 5% of the student population is Asian. And honestly I’ve never heard of segregation being a big deal. It might exist somewhat in the fraternities, but I’ve had a lot of experiences at Wake (living in the city it is in) and I’ve never seen what appears to be students separating themselves by race.
