Because I have found that this is highly subjective.

In monetary terms, what qualifies as the classes below (include whatever characteristics you find pertinent)?

In monetary terms, what qualifies as the classes below (include whatever characteristics you find pertinent)?
Wealthy:
Middle-class:
"Low-income":

It really depends on where you live but in general in the suburbs

wealthy - 100k +
middle - 45- 100
low - blow 45

i think there's a difference btwn wealth and income...wealth includes property, etc., not just how much you make each year

what people consider what is going to be vastly different depending on where people live.

and i agree that "wealth" has zero correlation to income

upper - CEO's, "old money", connections to washington, having a centurion card(amex "black" card)...
upper-middle - most doctors, lawyers, executives, business owners
middle - again, doctors, lawyers, executives, some unskilled labor
lower - unskilled labor, drop outs...

Low income: 50,000 or less in suburbs. About 25,000 or less in Detroit (only big city I know so I'm basing it off Detroit and it's suburbs.)
Middle-50,000-120,000 in suburbs. About 25,000-60,000 in Detroit.
Upper-120,000-200,000 in suburbs. Anything over 100,000 in Detroit.
Wealthy- A total worth of over 1,000,000 in the suburbs. Plus you probably have other properties. In Detroit, there's no such thing because if you're over 100,000 you're outta there.

Now, I've also lived in California so the numbers would be WAYY different there (I'm not going through them but basically double low and middle and quadruple upper and wealthy). It depends on where you live.

Yeah, everything's really inflated in Ca. The cost of a house in a nice area is over the top compared some other places, and incomes need to be much higher than ones listed above to be considered 'middle' or 'upper'.

I said around me. The economy in the Detroit area is extremely bad right now. So right now around me those are the actual classes.

What about in other cities?

Hilary Clinton

annual pretax income based on a 4-person family in northern California.

"Low-income"=$65k or less
Lower-middle class=$65k-$95k
Middle class=$100k-$175k
Upper middle=$175k-$400k
Upper=$400k+
Wealthy=$1,000k+

Take out taxes, and those figures may actually be deflated.

In terms of net worth, including real estate:

"Lower"=$450k or less
"Middle"=$450k-$3,500k
"Upper"=$3,500k+
"Wealthy"=$10,000k+

jeez. according to that, my family wouldn't even make middle class...

yeah... I really don't think I'm low-class...

"wealthy - 100k +
middle - 45- 100
low - blow 45"

I think that's a pretty good estimate.

Net of taxes, that is. Because after tax those figures are about $68k, $38k-$68k, and $38k and below.

You should NET $100k per year to be middle class AFTER taxes....which brings me to my next point. Where's the goddamn law that says one is liable for the personal income tax? And not to mention the income tax is just government-sanctioned stealing.

Yes, the establishment is ALWAYS wrong, even if they prove themselves right beyond any reasonable doubt.

Oh yeah, muslims aren't the enemy, the enemy is OUR OWN GODDAMN GOVERNMENT.

futurenyustudent: your stats are off depending on where you live in california. some parts are pretty wealthy city people but if you go into suburbs and even some rural area, the figures dont apply.

in our town, $75K--$150K is average...$150K--$300K is comfortable and there are tons of people in McMansions who make much more. Some of the houses here are ludicrous....theaters, dance rooms, elevators, etc. Some kids in this town come to school in BMW SUVs or Mercedes convertibles, and some walk to school. There's a big range. And although there are developments in which all the houses are huge, the town is pretty well mixed. One nice thing here is that wealth is seen as a kind of curiosity. It doesn't determine a kid's popularity, his/her personality and interests do. The town we used to live in not far away was far more lower-middle class. An income of $100K there would have put you at the top of the heap. So I guess your view of 'lower-middle-upper-wealthy' is very subjective and depends on where you find yourself. We moved from big fish in a little pond to minnows in a shark tank, lol! The schools are much better but it's weird to live in a place where kids go to Paris and Australia for spring break when my kids stay home and work!

wealthy - 500<
middle - 80-200
low - <50

In Norway, where I live, I'd say
Wealthy 1000
Upper Middle 200 - 800
Middle 75 - 150
Low 40 an below

There's no reason to ask for estimates from posters -- Economists gather and use this sort of information all the time and it's reported by US Census Bureau and available on-line. Just do a simple google search for income distribution and you can find income breakdowns by quintiles (the population divided into 5 parts) or deciles (ten parts). Call the top 1-2 deciles wealthy, the bottom 1-2 deciles low income and the rest middle class. Then you have real data. If you want to break it down more, you can get data by states and metropolitan region.
