What is with USC?

Yeah the email wasn't exactly the best either. They hardly appologized, just said that they have no obligation to get out decisions out at any time, and do the best they can. They said the fact I applied so early doesn't mean I should recieve a decision early (I don't think 4/10 is early, if I hadn't called them a million times, who knows when it would have gotten here). They kind of snuck in the sorry we can't offer you admission in the middle of the huge paragraph. I had to read it twice to even see it. The lady also sent me the steps for an appeal, and guess what, the deadline is 4/10! She said she would be so kind to extend it a full 3 days! I'm on break now, so I couldn't even appeal if I wanted to, I can't get a transcript from my counselor for over another week.

Thanks a lot USC, you guys really suck. So much for trying to improve their rankings, I would have helped raise the SAT and GPA average.

Dodgerblue, don't be so upset. I'm sure you'll have a successful future at McCombs. Remember: it's not the school you attend but that amount of work/effort you put into it.

Ya I don't really understand USC's admission, I thought for sure I'd be rejected.
SAT-1950
GPA-3.55, 5 AP's
White Male
Showed absolutely NO interest, which I regret b/c the school is awesome.
No hooks
Solid essays and recs

I don't know how but I was accepted to the College of Arts and Sci, and will most likely attend.

I hate the college admission process...

I'm sorry to all of those who didn't make it, it really is a crapshoot.

I live in Thailand..and still haven't heard. I had problems with USC's mails before, where I received their letters much much later than when they were sent. But..I don't know. I guess I should assume that I'm rejected then.

When I was a senior, just like you, it took FOREVER to hear whether I got in or not. I called the Admissions Office many times and they told me I had everything, then the last time I called to complain (in April), they told me that my application fee never went through, so they had not even considered my application yet. I have no idea what that was about considering it showed up on my parent's credit statement. O well, so we paid again and the next week... rejected. I got a 1310 SAT and had a 4.4 GPA, and ridiculous activities. EVERYONE from my school gets in, what is with that??? I have been stuck at UCSB for two years and am applying again as a transfer, and this time-I made SURE my fee went through.

You must really be set on going to USC.

I haven't heard from USC either and I live in CA. I just assume I got rejected because it seems unlikely that they would take so long for them to respond to an accepted applicant. USC isn't one of my top choices, but if it was I would be pretty dissappointed. Unless my letter got lost in the mail or something, it seems pretty inconsiderate and insensitive to make someone wait someone wait so long.

Has anyone tried to find out their status on-line? Prior to April we were able to get into the admissions site and check the status of the application. However, when we tried last weekend, we could not access the application status. I don't know whether USC has a wait list, but perhaps this is a way to avoid a wait list. Or, it truly is lost in the mail. They may use a bulk mailer when sending out rejections and a batch could have been lost.

Try calling the Office of Admissions and demanding your decision. They may have it on file.

Otherwise, they should refund your application fee. :)

^ An argument worth making.

I finally recieved my rejection letter today. USC told me that it was sent April 1st. Well that was obviously a lie, considering it was dated April 6th, and postmarked April 8th.

Dude, that's pretty mess up for USC to lie like that.

Just what is with USC in general this year? A grand total of 4 people got in out of like 20-30 that applied. Everyone was very qualified and most/all got into UCLA and UC Berkeley. The 4 didn't even get into those places. And rejecting someone who got into Harvard (someone else's post above), I mean, who do they think they are? They wait uber long to mail out your letters and sometimes they do not even do that.... Com'on

the same kind of thing happened @ my school..only 1 person from my entire senior class got in, which is pretty weird considering some of these kids got into LA, Berkeley, NYU, etc etc
do you think admissions @ USC is significantly harder than previous years because the applicant pool has increased, because USC is raising their standards, or both?

Part of it is how many applied from each school. My niece's HS had about 300 of their class of 400 apply & they only accepted 200 out of the entire state, so I guess the majority of her school was also rejected by USC. She was accepted but is opting for Notre Dame instead, which is her dream school. My son's HS also had a lot of applicants, especially NMFs, because they are looking forward to 1/2 tuition. Some of them were also rejected & got into schools considered quite selective, so who knows? I know USC is very selective among HI students because they get so many applicants from HI.

In all fairness to USC, it is an elite institution, not exactly Northwestern Louisiana Tech State College University (would be funny if that existed, though). If your beef is with USC and you into UCLA/Berkeley then you should be happy to attend one of those two schools. USC is beginning to climb the ranks of the undergraduate level, this is probably just the beginning.

Also, not everyone who was accepted had top SAT scores and/or grades and/or extra-curricular activities and/or essays. Some of them were able to show a true fit with the school, maybe whether or not they seemed extremely or not-so interested in their application.
The entire college process has its faults so it really isn't fair to say that it's just USC.

i agree..there's also a major influx of applicants this year that is making the admissions process all together harder at many schools.

yea, i agree
