I kinda stole this thread from other schools...but we're hearing a lot of positives about the school. What are the negative aspects of Georgetown??

dam, stop hatin, gtown is fresh to perfection. lets talk negatives in april if they reject me.

haha...i started the one in WUSTL btw; i think all colleges need this type of thread in their forum

maden10, this helps others figure out whether or not they should or shouldn't apply to a certain college

I personally didn't consider georgetown once I knew about their religious affiliation; IMO, this can only limit the perspectives of the students found at Georgetown--transfers conservative

i was concerned about the religious affliation - i'm an atheist and really liberal. but i felt i should expose myself to different beliefs, especially if they're different from my own. i guess the problem with that is i might not be happy/comfortable in a conservative environment....but georgetown can't be that conservative...can it? gulps

It's location may be the worst, then again it's a good distance from downtown Federal City. Catholics, yeh.. I'm a bit worried about that (I'm Protestant), but then again it's okey. I think it's funny how easy peple go crazy about this stuff. They are not going to lure us into Gtown and then try to convert us all... think logical I mean your supposed to be going to college. And Gtown ain't your local Podunk U.

when they have religion classes taught by athiests and muslims...i dont think the catholic thing is too big

It's conservative for a top university, which are usually very liberal. It's good to go to a school like Gtown if you want to do something with politics because spending your college years preaching to the chior isn't going to make you any smarter or give you a better understanding of the political/larger world. I've heard the political bent is 50/50, like the rest of the country.

The campus is ugly and rundown looking (sorry, just my opinion).

absolutely not. my cousins are conservative catholics and they keep warning me about georgetown, lol--apparently it's not too concerned about being catholic. this doesn't bother me a ton, because i've grown up in a place where catholics are rare. so carrying on my faith independently doesn't really bother me.

so if you're not catholic or even conservative, i really don't think you need to worry--like bobbobbob said, it's not a huge issue there. some even consider gu a liberal hotbed.

and i have to disagree with you, gcards (have i already done this in another thread? :p )

gcards: wow. totally different reaction than what i had.
mine: "oh my god, beautiful! so pretty! must go to pretty georgetown!"
but i went on this perfect 65 degree "not a cloud in the sky" kind of day, so maybe that swayed everything...

bad thing:
i hear the dorms aren't so great
as of october or such, a bunch of those "blue light emergency system" things were not actually working

eruanneth: thats interesting to think of gu as a "liberal hotbed" :P i guess its all relative

another bad thing: no online app! (of course thats more of a beef i have with the admissions office than the school)

exactly. btw, not my opinion, it's that of my cousins who are very conservo catholics. gu is a little too liberal for my taste, but not quite a "hotbed" in my mind. just theirs.

lol yes, the georgetown app took me longer than any of the others to file--i ended up w/ like 5 different half-finished copies (i kept changing my ec classifications, pictures, talents, etc.--didn't know how to present them). paper sucks! :(

Gtown is 50/50 politics-wise. The whole Catholic thing isn't too strong.

I didn't apply to Georgetown for several reasons. One, I didn't like the campus when I went there - it was too immaculate for me - everything was too new-looking, and I didn't like the idea of a closed campus. I also didn't like the school's presentation - everything was way (WAY) too formal, and the admissions officer was too.. I dunno. He seemed too serious to me. Granted admissions officers shouldn't be comedians, but I don't know.. GTown just didn't give me the warm feeling that I would like to have from a college administration/community. Also, I didn't like the location and the fact that all the students around me were either decked out in business attire or jogging in their expensive athletic wear with their ipods. Just gave me a sense of snottiness, and everybody I've talked to who goes to school in the DC area tells me that Gtown is known for their share of snobs.

Also, I didn't like the fact that they weren't considering the SAT's writing section in their admissions.

I'm surprised that you didn't like seeing people walk around in suits- that's one thing that I really like. It shows how even though we're just college students we're taking part in important events on campus or have internships that will help when applying for jobs.
Gtown is not conservative, there are many more democrats than republicans but that's typical of most colleges. Unlike some other schools though, people here know why they have their opinions as opposed to just being republican because their parents are.
I personally wish that we had a good football team- I turned down USC and Berkeley and I kind of wish that there was that level of enthusiasm for football here, but we make due with our basketball team.

yes, i totally agree. further affirms my opinion that university admissions is a math person's world, and writers are second-class citizens. (lol, not quite, but it does seem unfair that if you get an 800 in math, you're practically a deity, but if you get an 800 in writing no one really cares. at least at the major universities.)

aargh! :(

i got an 800 in math...

and i hate writing (700)...so yea, im happy about that.

1560 MV woo!

and by the way, nothing can be too liberal there eruanneth...only too conservative.

HA! Im so objective!

but 700 isn't bad. a 620 in math and an 800 in writing, however, is a little more lopsided, bob.

if only i was hs class of 2008 or something...they'll have accepted writing as standard by then. :( oh well.

yea i didn't like that they weren't considering writing either...although georgetown certainly isn't alone in doing so.
