Today i called New York TAP regarding not receiving my letter confirming that the tuition money for 2010-2011 has been send to college. The representative told me something about NY senate or governor not checking the budget or something and that its probably not going to be done until september.
Does anyone else have the same problem?I am going to a private college and they told me that TAP should give me couple of thousand dollars towards my tuition. If im not gonna get that money....how will i be able to pay for the tuition then, or go to college overall?

bump…

Tap is not finalized until the NY State Legislature approves a budget with a TAP amendment and the Governor signs it. I don’t know of any schools that will require you to pay this up front if you have been approved for TAP. The schools will get it when the check is mailed and accept the estimated award amount as a deduction from your bill.

So i dont have to worry about not getting those promised money?

TAP will come through eventually and the colleges are all familiar with NY’s budget delays…I wouldn’t worry about it. The biggest issue holding up the budget is the SUNY proposal. You can always email your school for assurance that they will not expect payment up front from you.

Ok but still lets say college promised me 3500 from tap and actually recieves 2500 from tap…Where the hell am i suppose to come up with 1k?I mean i already accepted loans and financial aid and they told me i only have to pay 200-300 bucks per semester which is not bad at all but 1k is kinda a lot…

First of all, the college didn’t promise you any amount of TAP. TAP is always awarded by the HESC every year and the awards are always estimated until the budget is in place…so the amount listed on your FA award letter is an estimate only. TAP is not scheduled to be reduced this year and that is not one of the things holding up the budget - the proposal was only to reduce TAP by $75 and I think that was even dropped. If it is reduced by some last minute budget change then your family will have to make up the difference…I think that is unlikely for this year but, with the state of our economy, you should be prepared for changes to come in future years. Most schools have some sort of monthly payment arrangement and also take credit cards. In the overall picture, we’re pretty fortunate that our state student aid has remained stable compared to other states that have suffered big cuts.

Ispoke too soon, it seems Gov Patterson vetoed the legislature’s restoration of the TAP cuts so the $75 drop for undergrads looks to be back on the table for now…

Btw, if you’re going to be a SUNY student, you may want to keep tabs on the real issue which is the proposal to “unshackle” the SUNY’s and allow them to set their own tuition rates among other things. This issue is at the heart of the budget delays as the gov has promised to veto any budget that does not include this legislation:

Am having the same problem too and I called as well. Along w/ them not giving me my TAP, I have not had my Robert C. Bryd(sp?) scholarship applyed to my account. So now I have over 2x more tuition to pay by August 17.

so from what you are saying, im prolly going to get 75$ less than i was suppose to?

I would plan on it being less and then you may be pleasantly surprised!

well nevertheless 75$ is not that bad comparing to a couple of thousand))And no i go to private college
