What is you/your kid’s intended/landed major/job

I’ll start:
CS / Finance
CS / Undecided

D’s major was Chem E/polymer and materials eng.

She’s working in advanced composite manufacturing in a rotational engineering leadership development program. Planning to do an MBA down the road.

Work/life balance super is important and she hates big cities. Long term career ambition: head of ops for a large manufacturing company.

Hope it’s OK that I added more nuance to the response and thanks for starting this thread!

Many of us have “long since” grads. Are you also looking to see where they started (as a major) and where they actually landed (with a degree or job?)???

Child 1- Communication Disorders and Sciences/Education (went to grad school)
Child 2- Biology, minors in chemistry and Spanish/genetic counseling (worked first (TFA, CRC) now entering grad school)
Was premed but after shadowing and interviewing realized it was not for her and also wanted a work/life balance - geneticist is a ton of school, no interest in PhD. Considered NP but backed out for the same reasons (did not enjoy the actual work, and for accelerated DNP did not enjoy the intro BSN material/class work etc).

I think it will be useful for kids or parents of
kids to see what majors lead where

So you are asking for both majors/landed jobs? Sorry your title is not clear.

Yes. I think that would be most informative. How
should I change the title?

Maybe one of these (depending on what content you are trying to get):
What Was Your Kid’s Major and If Employed, What Job Did They Land?

or

Post Your Kid’s Initial Major/Graduated Major/Job Landed

Just suggestions - do what you like!

I think intended or targeted job is also interesting for kids that are still in college.

That would be so interesting!

I’m going to be a hs senior this August, intending to major in biophysics or biology/cell and molecular biology if they don’t offer biophysics, and hoping to be a perinatologist (maternal-fetal medicine specialist)! I’m young so I could change my mind, but that’s the plan for now!

Son switched in hs from astrophysics to pilot to atmospheric science to Mech E because he saw it as a realistic path to a good living.

Wanted auto engineering and did it two summers. But they didn’t hire in Fall. He didn’t wait.

He’s in a aerospace leadership development rotational starting in Utah and two weeks in loving the mountains and outdoor opportunities. Too early to know if he’ll like the role. I imagine an mba is possible down the road.

Daughter an international studies and poli sci major. Wants to work with refugees. This summer is working in the civil rights division of a state agency. Will intern somewhere in dc this fall (I hope) as she’s attending her schools Washington semester. She wants to work at an agency, not for a politician…keep partisanship off her resume. Interested to see what her future holds.

I wanted to be a sportscaster. Yet I work for an auto manufacturer, helping dealers. I did spend 9 months off air in television. And years later hit an mba. Very unexpected.

It’s interesting to see intended and years later.

Both D’s undergrad degrees in physical sciences. Then they went into Masters in Architecture and Masters in Industrial Design. So, was the science wasted? not at all. Very useful in having a science background going into the next degree and eventual jobs.

My kids are so far on very straight paths:
DD1- graphic design/graphic designer
DD2- recreation management/coordinator of a university outdoor rec department

Yes, rec majors get jobs :stuck_out_tongue:. We like to say one majored in coloring, and the other in recess.

S had a straightforward path - majored in accounting, got a master’s in accounting and his first job was at a Big 4 accounting firm. He is a CPA. The field is well suited for his strengths.

D got a BS in psychology (took a lot of science/math along the way) with a theater minor undergrad. She considered pre-med but decided she didn’t want to go down that path. During junor year we encouraged her to explore a number of career options. She wanted a career where she could work with kids and utilize her undergrad background. Ultimately she went for a masters and became a speech pathologist and is very happy.

Did she start as pre-med focused or did this come later?

My D is a Bioengineering Major (Global Health Technologies minor). Plans to work in R&D/engineering for a medical device company doing medical device design/product management.
