What is your average reading speed??

How many pages of college level social science text book do you guys think one should be able to "read & understand" per an hour to gain a college sucesss?

haven't tested but I can read a novel by looking at the center of the page and scrolling down. Heard somewhere that that makes a proficient reader ha.

my average readigng speed is.."way too fast"

The average reading speed is 250 words/minute, but it should vary depending on what you're reading. If it's fiction, 250 words is the average, though many can read much faster. If it's something that requires thought, though, you should go as slow as it takes you to understand it. So there's no defined time for how long it should take.

As kyle said, it should vary significantly depending on what you're reading and the level of comprehension you need to attain. If you are speed-reading a novel, it's possible to achieve in excess of a thousand words per minute and still understand enough to pass a simple quiz (I've done it a number of times -- note that this is more skimming than reading when you go at that speed), but if you are reading a textbook or doing something for school, you should definitely read at a comfortable speed -- no need to time yourself and such
