My experience has been great. I picked my roommate before school started and we’re very close, but we’re also independent enough to be on our own if we need to be. We’re also quite respectful of each other’s schedules and habits. She’s as tough as nails, so I don’t have to worry about her safety or health much either.

But it’s definitely not like this for everyone. One kid in a nearby building had a diagnosed psychopath as his roommate (no one really knew about this until about 3 weeks into the semester) and had to get the roommate to move out. And there are have also been the usual squabbles; lights, noise, sexiling etc that have caused some roommate issues. I’ve noticed that dorming is a whole lot better if you know your roommate before the semester starts. You should be able to come back to the dorm after a long day and feel okay with being miserable around your roommate.

You should also be okay with being responsible for your roommate (to some degree). For instance, my roommate and I let each other know how long/late we may be out so the other person knows to get help if we’re not back within a reasonable timeframe. If you wind up with a roommate who parties a lot, you should be okay with keeping an eye out for their drunken-selves. Same goes for depression; this is actually the most difficult trait because you have to make sure your roommate isn’t going suicidal. If something goes wrong, it’ll hit you hard even if you weren’t that close to your roommate.
