<p>Just wondering what you guys have as "Hooks" out there...</p>
<p>"hooks" are like if you're a Under Represented Minority.</p>
<p>With all of these affirmative action students, does being a white person in a middle class neighborhood count as a hook?</p>
<p>But my real one is that I am tri-lingual and learning a fourth.</p>
<p>ha- yeah- I am a middle-class suburban white girl not poor enough to be a charity case and not smart enough to be a prodigy. that, in itself, should be a hook. XD
but:
I've been dancing since I was two, have competed regionally and nationally, and I'm applying to colleges not known for dance programs, (who won't have as many dancers applying as, say, Julliard).
oh- and I'm the next J.K. Rowling.

<p>hooks
superatheletes like olympic status
helped research cure for cancer or something like that
wrote a novel, not just any novel, and not just published by anyone
overcame significant adversity- grew up in a ghetto neighborhood with lots of gang activity and went to school while being shot and at the same time worked multiple jobs to support your family because your family makes low income and on top of that got good grades and scores
shows real potential or genius like winning math/science olympiad</p>
<p>URM
Recruited Athlete
Olympiad medalists</p>
<p>Those are hooks meaning things colleges really want to add. URM's add diversity which colleges crave, athletes boost the sports program and depending on the college add significant revenue. Olympiad medalists are generally the very top of the academic pool and DISTINGUISHED from the other high scorers/etc.</p>
<p>Stuff like being a piano master/starting a business/etc. all are quality things on an application but none of them scream that this student HAS to be admitted. But you don't have to be hooked to be admitted. In fact the vast majority of admitted students DON'T have significant hooks.</p>
<p>Me .</p>
<p>lol! haha, well i hope i'll be the one curing the cancer someday!</p>
