do those count?

Last year, I spent a few months in a hospital for heart failure and I'm going to write on my application essay about how it changed my life and influenced me.
ITs probably goign to be like "IT made me realize her precious life is" type of crap....

Are you goign to be a doctor just so you can have the "dr" before your last name! Thats why I want to be a doctor

i can put my fist in my mouth

A "hook" would be putting your shoe in your mouth.

I'm not applying to any top colleges, but I suppose I have a few hooks.

-Come from the inner city, go to an underserved public school.
-Am one of only 2 white people in a black/hispanic school.
-Went through foster care, overcame those struggles.

I've done good academic and extracurricular work but I feel these things are what affect me the most and give me the character I have today, hence the reasons I would be good for the colleges I am going to apply to.

I posed naked for David G. Blythe.

I don't know if it's considered a hook lol, but I'm captain of the volleyball team, president of math club, and I speak Arabic and French fluently. Plus, I'm from Saudi Arabia.

i eat about 3000 calories a day and i'm 115 lbs?

-URM status
-Have survived two major health crises
-was at babysitter's house when someone attempted a drive-by shooting as a child
-experience in international business with major flooring company (you know all that fake wood Wal-Mart has on their floors now? that comes from our company)

theres a few people who are putting in things like President of ______ Club. that's not really a hook. some interesting ones. health crises? wow.

Yeah, let's just say I've seen more of the inside of a hospital than I ever cared to see.

lol abdul, maybe oil can be your hook :)

I am homeschooled, so I self-taught myself many subjects, including calc.

I have taken Beginning and Intermediate Greek (ancient dialects) at a top university and hence, I am a prospective classics major.

"Hooks"? I don't know.

i go to public school, so i self taught myself many things.
research would be my hook.

A "hook" is some distinguishing factor (and if you have a hook of distinguished excellence, you will be called a "DE" by some admissions folks) that makes a school really WANT to have you there. A "tip" is something that might get you admitted if you are one of many finalists for a few remaining slots.

Hooks include (but are not limited to) things like these:

NCAA level athlete (one of the best hooks imaginable)

NCTE winner

Best delegation winner in Model UN

Professional acting or (even better) acting on national television, Broadway, or in the movies

All-state band

Eagle Scout

Student Body Government

ROTC Scholarships

etc.

"Tips" or "tip factors" are such things as geography, socio-economic status, heartstring tuggers, ethnic background (in most schools), first in generation college student, etc.

Hooks are better than tips for helping you to get in.

1) Glider Pilots License
2) Solo Powered Pilot
3) Learning and playing the Tablas
4) Speak 4-5 languages ( which include 1-2 dialects )
5) Originally Indian, born and brought up in the Middle East, and now live in the US ( so the whole International thing would be my hook too ) ..

I've lived in Moscow, Brussels, and Stockholm (twice)... I speak three languages fluently (Swedish, French, English, in that order) and a fourth half-decently (Spanish). I pretty much taught myself English when I was 10. I think my main "hook" would be my photography portfolio, though.

Tarhunt, I don't think eagle scout and student body government are hooks. While they are impressive, I don't think they quite qualify as hooks. They do help a lot in college admissions, however, especially eagle scout. Other than those two, I think Tarhunt has it right...hooks are a much bigger thing than what most people are putting on here.
