What is your ideal future?

Federal employees generally have lower salaries than those with comparable jobs in the private sector, but there are numerous benefits to make up for it (I know this because my father is a federal employee).

In my case, though, I'm not doing it for the money. I just want to be like one of the "good" characters in The Ugly American.

ideal future
after college::

Move to Manhattan, working at hedge fund lol lol
bang hot european models, with nice legs
drive nice cars
take nice vacations

ahahah that's all a dream
more realistically:
rent a manhattan apartment the size of a walk-in closet lol(until I make some dough)
work as a day trader, at mid range firm

I'd like to be an aerospace engineer one day.

I also hope to find a husband and live in an elegant gingerbread-inspired house.

:)

you know, i was secretly hoping our generation would be a little more worldly and open-minded, but i guess big houses and big bank accounts are still (sadly) the typical american dream.

i mean, almost any teenage guy you'll find wants a hot model wife, lots of money, a fast car, etc., which is completely normal. seriously though, it's saddening how blind most people prefer to be in the face of the things we'll be forced into dealing with pretty soon -- climate change, mass extinctions, starvation, AIDS, the brain drain, mass refugee situations. you have to ask yourself whether it's worth it for you, your wife, and your 3 kids to be 'earning' enough money each year to support dozens of starving people elsewhere in the world.

personally, i'd love to keep having the sheltered life i've had for 17 years, but for some twisted reason, i'd like much more to get into science and education with the crazy hope of contributing more to the world than i've consumed.

I'm actually quite detailed... I know exactly what I want.
Go to boarding school.
Go to college.
Go to medical school. Meet the man I want to marry.
Begin interships/residencies/etc. for psychiatry. Marry the man I met in med school.
Begin work in government/large practice. Have one child.
Begin own private practice as a child/criminal psychiatrist (I haven't decided...) Have second child.

And depending on our income and the amount of time our careers take up, I'd like to have 3 or 4 children in all. But I don't want to raise a child I can't afford to give everything it needs. (Not wants, just needs).

tberbert: I want to help people, and contribute to the world. My ideal future is a family and a strong career that I enjoy. The details here... Are whatever. Am I sheltered because I want a loving, large family and a private practice where I can help people with mental disorders (perhaps venturing into research, therefore contributing to the world in an even larger scale)?
I know you weren't talking about me, I posted after you, duh. But I have some of the same aspirations as you detailed above: a hot husband (though "hot" is relative), money, and 3 kids? And I'm blind to the world?

husband. amazing gorgeous house in a quiet, clean, friendly location. 2-3 kids. 2 german shepherds or golden retrievers...or huskies...or...okay i'll stop.
um, white or red mercedes convertible plus acura or something (i trust japanese cars more than anythin else). of course, a stable job w/high pay (i wanna be like an ambassador or something for china or USA)...and i want to travel all around the globe and just enjoy all the sceneries.

travel the world. marry michael phelps (HA!)

^ haha good luck w/that! cuz i'm sure there are thousands of others right now who want to marry him tooo!

^lol true, but it would definitely be the ideal future (for me anyway) :)

well, he IS pretty cute

e leigh mac: no no no, by all means, wanting that stuff in itself doesn't make you blind to anything. it's great that you want to help people with genuine problems. the real issue here is that such a vast majority of our generation is preoccupied with the yuppie mentality of the 1980's -- go to an ivy, get a good job, nice house, nice car, big family, the whole nine yards, with "helping people" as a byproduct of their career. our generation can't keep going after that kind of life and expect the real problems i mentioned in my last post to be either solved automatically or removed from them. the lack of empathy just astonishes me.

tberbert, i'm not sure if i quite understand the angle of your post, possibly because of my lack of sleep lol..but in reality i want to travel the world's oceans studying marine biology and the environmental issues that involve the ocean..and i would love to find that one guy i could spend the rest of my life with..sure it would be nice to have a huge house with a gorgeous husband and a bunch of children and nice car ("the whole nine yards") but it's definitely not what i'm striving for..i just want to live my life doing something i love to do..so you can put that in whatever category you like..but thats just me

I'd do a lot more good with crazy riches and my fluency in multiple languages than by getting into 'education.' It has been my intent for getting rich, but hey, for all that work I want to sit pretty too.

And as a second career, I decided I wanted to start up a gifted school in an underprivileged area. Send some kids to the Ivies, all that good stuff. =]

HAHAHA! I thought about that too! Wouldn't that be awesome?

I'll never understand the allure of having sex with as many women as possible, though =(

My thing would be to get with the most attractive women of the world from each country, lol.

Haha, my dream is to open up trilingual schools (English, Spanish, Portuguese) all over the US catering mostly to Latinos (but of course I'll accept the others) that teaches in all 3 languages, teaches them the real history of the world as is, and focuses on the events of the world and the US.

But forget ivies, my students would be better than those fools :D

once again, just being rich is completely fine, but it shouldn't be anyone's sole goal. i want to be rich too, so i can then put that money into, i dunno, EDUCATION and SCIENCE! lol.

it does get to a ludicrous point, though, when people can sleep at night being billionaires. no single person needs warren buffett-style riches, unless they actively use it for the greater good (e.g., legitimate environmental/medical research).

Point taken.

It's not my sole goal, but it's definitely up there, lol.

I want to work in the engineering field (civil engineering) and improve the infrastructure of a large city. Then I'd like to renovate a house so that I can have separate rooms for entertainment, fitness equipment, musical instruments, and also set up recording equipment in the music room. I also want to have a spacious bathroom with a jacuzzi and a large walk-in closet. I either want to live in a large city or near one. Then, maybe I can marry a gorgeous blonde (or brunette) and raise children who will become talented and famous for acting, music, or dancing.

I feel so unproductive/pathetic seeing as I seem to be the only person who wouldn't want to have to work :S

I want to own a hedgehog and a Spyder, and I want to figure out how brains work while doing a little graphic design on the side

:)
