What is your impression of astronomy research?

And what do you think of astronomers in general? How intelligent do you think they are? Do you consider their research to be useful? Interesting? What about astrobiologists in particular?

Interesting to be sure, but not particularly useful. Until we need to escape Earth in the face of certain extinction.

It’s useful in that we really need to be making progress towards space research, to be able to avoid disasters as best we can. When the time comes and there’s a massive asteroid hurtling right at us, it’ll be too late. If anything, we need to spend more money on this research, to be able to use technology to help decrease the chance of us being wiped out by a celestial disaster.
I see what you did with your location… I think it could be useful that we can find some very valuable and useful metals, elements, etc.
However, at this point what’s useful is really more down the road like a new planet, discovering extra-terrestrial life, and worm-hole travel. I think it’s really interesting to use astronomy to discover more about the universe and its wonders. Astrobiology is less useful at this point, it may prove so when we can discover things that can benefit us as a race, but until then it’s as evolved as finding a simple cell outside of planet earth.

I want to be astrophysicist because I want to delve into the truths of existence. It’s useful in the sense that their results may change human perception towards a more truthful direction on certain issues, but it’s not practical, although I am biased since I care about the former than the latter.
