I just got accepted to Rutgers NB and I really like this school, specifically the engineering school which is the one I got into. It seems to have a lot of good programs, and everyone I've met who goes/works there says they love it. I also have heard about the engineering program being pretty highly rated. A , especially with the in-state tuition cost of ~$10,000/yr commuting (~$22,000 residential).
However, at my high school, which is in NJ, Rutgers has some sort of infamy for being the place where people who don't get accepted any place better go. I'm finding it hard to get excited about going there when everyone talls about it like it's where all the dumb kids go (which I KNOW isn't true) and sort of poke fun at anyone who wants to go.
I'm not sure why everyone talks about this school like this at my school. I thought at first that it was just the idea of going to college so close to home that was unappealing, but is there something I'm missing? What do you think? Is Rutgers New Brunswick a good school?

It’s an excellent school, especially for certain majors (not limited to but) including engineering, mathematics, philosophy (one of the best in the world), computer science. I’m sure there are many more, but those are a few that I know. Some of the top graduates from my kids’ school have attended Rutgers as their first choice because there are excellent scholarships, too. One is now at an Ivy league graduate school. My younger son was also accepted recently, though he does not know where he will go, yet, it’s a great option.

Its all snobbery, thats why. all your “friends” who go to elite colleges, if they major in history or philosphy or journalism, they are screwed. What is the real differnece between an engineering graduate from Rutgers or say, Princeton? if you got the skills, people will hire you. Go for computer or systems engineering and employers will beat the door down to hire you.

Rutgers is a great school. If you really want to look at just rankings, Rutgers is ranked #53 in the USA in Engineering (70 overall), compare that to the thousands(?) of universities in the USA (US NEWS). Also, I believe TIME Magazine ranked Rutgers as a top 100 University in the entire world. That is pretty impressive. With the rather low cost of attendance coupled with possible merit scholarships and a prestigious Honors Program, I find it hard to justify laughing at Rutgers.
