I am planning on having my son read through common applications in August and start having some rough drafts for essay questions. I wanted to see what the parents and students of 09 are planning on applications, essays, scholarship applications. Since it is going to be our first experience to the process, I would appreciate any input you may suggest.

when i applied i basically did the same thing as what you are planning, with the addition of finishing my rolling-admission school applications in september

First your son should sort out all the various forms he has to fill in for all the schools. What schools require their own application, what schools have supplements, and so on. The application itself shouldn't take very long. It's just filling in objective information, except for the essays and teacher recommendations. Find out whether the colleges require any specific teachers for recommendations. It's a good idea to ask teachers for recommendation in September. As for essays, it's a good idea to spend a bit of time in the summer thinking about topics. Your son's version of a good essay will change as he changes.

Here's a good timeline: NACAC Senior Year Calendar

If your family's financial issues are complicated, it would help to find out more about the FAFSA before January. It took me longer to fill out all the financial aid forms than the actual college application!

dchow08, thank you for the link.

Also be aware that you have to have any financial aid app i done on the same time line and even earlier if he applies ED.

i started my essay as soon as july, i.e. getting some rough drafts ready. but don't worry until august/september. i wish ur son the best in his essay!
