We are from the midwest and my D is very partial to the change of seasons. We have our list of schools but we have a few straglers on it because of the weather. She does not think she would do well at schools that didn't have cooler tempatures at least part of the year. As she puts it she likes to bundle up and wear hoodies. Obviously our midwest and east coast schools are not a problem but I have listed a few schools if anyone could chime in on what ther typical weather is like I would appreciate it.

Coastal Carolina
Elon

Hi there! I can chime in about CCU (I could probably chime in about Texas State as well because it’s my original neck of the woods, but I’ll leave that to a current student). At CCU we actually have pretty nice changes of weather, although winter is obviously a bit shorter and definitely tamer than up North. In August and September the weather is hot- high 80s into mid 90s… beach weather! Then we got a cold front in late September, since then it’s varied from mid-80s to the low 60’s, kind of sporatic. In November/December it’s mostly in the 60’s, and then we actually have gotten bits of ice and a snow the last two years I’ve been here in January/February. Weather is usually in the 40s and low 50s in the winter, although last year was tame compared to my freshmen year which was just freezing to a Texas gal. Then spring comes again fairly early in March and by the time your out of school it’s back to the beach in the 90s.

I will say that the weather is slightly unpredictable here… but that’s anywhere I suppose! We get a lot of rain and humidity because of the ocean, but when it’s beautiful- let me tell you, it is beautiful.

My son is at Texas State and the thing he missed the most his first year was the change from summer to fall. In October, he started wearing fall clothes even though it was still hot out. He and his northern/midwestern classmates still miss the perennial apple orchard/pumpkin patch fall outings. It was very unusual, but it did SNOW in San Marcos his freshman year; classes were cancelled for a day or two!

My daughter goes to Coastal with AlexaMT and she loves that she can go to the beach and swim in the ocean is October, but she really misses “real apple cider”! And the apples in the store are from Michigan (home) :)

Oh, and hoodies are needed year round in both places: in warm months due to AC and in cooler months as a layer.

Texas State - hot and hotter for nine months out of the year. “Coolish” for Dec-Feb. And maybe 1 or 2 days a year when you actually have to wear a coat (or just add an extra layer). And yes, we have no “fall”.

In Texas you also have to be prepared for the cold fronts that blow in from Canada - we had a few sub zero days every winter in Corpus Christi!!

Since Elon has not been represented in a response - it rarely snows there - some winters not at all, some one or twice, very lightly. I do not pretend to tell you how to feel, but I hope weather is not be very high on your list of attributes when choosing a training program. First - most of the classes are indoors. More importantly - the greatest centers of MT are in places like NYC, London, Toronto - it snows in those places. National tours go through many snowy spots. I’m just saying…

Yes, Texas State is hot and hotter! “But it’s a dry heat!” ;)

So for anyone from the humid mid-west, it is more tolerable than much of our summer weather. When we dropped my son off his freshman fall, it was over 100 degrees every day and people kept apologizing for the heat. I only broke a sweat one day (move-in day) and told anyone who apologized that it was great compared to what we have in MI: 80 degrees and close to 100% humidity! When we got off the plane in Detroit to just that kind of weather, we began to sweat immediately!

In 2 1/2 years, including one summer, my son has never once complained about the heat in TX. And he has learned to dress for southern-style AC!

Agree with mtdog71 - it’s only 4 years! And it flies by!

Thanks, weather is not a top factor but when narrowing the list down and not needing to keep all the reaches or highly competitive programs it helps in taking one or two off-especially since campus style and size has not factored in my D’s decision making. My D would hate to be without fall and have it hot all the time.
