what it takes to get published

Okay, so I'm working on a research project now over the summer and I was wondering what it takes to get myself published. the thing is, the project was not independently started by me, I joined an exisiting project that the professor had. So can I still get myself published somehow about my results?

(a) The professor has to think the results are worth publishing. This requires that there be results (interesting ones, that he’d like to tell people about).
(b) The professor has to view you as a significant contributor to the project. This varies a lot with how nice the professor is and how often you see him.

You can still get published, but you’ll probably be fourth-author or something, if you get any credit at all. That’s still really good for a high-school student.
