What I've learned about full-ride scholarships

mom of four…

It’s hard to find large assured scholarships in the NE. Maybe some of the lower tier privates?

Does he want a LAC or a small private university or what?

How much merit are you looking for? Full tuition? Half tuition? $10k per year?

UDayton Ohio isn’t the Northeast, but it does have assured merit.

[url=<a href=“http://www.udayton.edu/admission/affordability.php]Affordability[/url”>Undergraduate : University of Dayton, Ohio]Affordability[/url]

mom of four: ASU, Ariz State in Phoenix, was offering free tuition to NMF from out of state last year, plus honors housing and dining hall.

Science majors get a lot more interest from all colleges, the “STEM” categories.

Thanks for the replies.

Son will be driving with hubby and d3 to Univ of Alabama next week (D3 attends UA, soph) to drop off D3 and D3’s car, and will be given a UA Honors tour Thursday Aug 11.

For S, we would like to find merit aid OOS to keep tuition/housing to 20k/year, which would make it less – eg about 8k less–than the cost of UCs here in California (dont qualify for any need based aid).

Intended major: business/ CS minor – but of course all that can change. Would like college / University to be have at least 5,000 undergrad students, prefers Northeast of U.S. IF he attends college in Cali, he likes UCLA (D2 will be a senior this fall there).

My son got a full ride scholarship offer to UNCs Honor Program. Thats like winning a small lottery. they really pursued him hard. he had a 4.5 GPA, 2380 SAT, 800 on subject matter tests, etc. We visited UNC and it was very tempting…but he just didn’t see it. He’s heading to Pomona in a few weeks. And Im writing the checks. We are blessed that I’ve said for this since the day he was born and have the money. Everyone isn’t as blessed. You can only do what is best for your family and your child, all things considered. We were lucky to have options. I wish the best decision and outcome for all.

For this scholarship business, do you need to do something special?
As in apply to a special program or do a supplemental application?
Or will they look at your initial application to the school and notify you that they would love to have you and simply offer you the money strait forward?

[UAB - The University of Alabama at Birmingham](http://www.uab.edu)… automatic merit based on gpa

total cost of attendance for oos student is 20-24K so an elite leaves you 5-9K per year

tier 1 research university

urban campus 11k undergrads.

Blazer Elite Scholarship

$15,000/year
Based on academic achievement (28-36 ACT and at least 3.0 GPA)
Blazer Gold Scholarship

$10,000 /year

Blazer Pride Scholarship

$5,000 /year

Ohio University has guaranteed scholarships. Mom of 4 your son would get full tuition
[The Gateway Award Program: Ohio University Admissions](http://www.ohio.edu/admissions/gateway/)
They combine the Gateway Excellence and Gateway Trustee to = full tuition for OOS students. They also have an Honors Tutorial college (very unique - only one in USA)
[Ohio University: Honors Tutorial College](<a href=“Honors at OHIO | Ohio University”>http://www.honors.ohio.edu/)

It’s a little bit closer to the Northeast. Good luck.

I would like to know more about the schools that give full- rides . Can you give examples?
Thanks.

Festus, this is a very old thread with a lot of useful information, but since you are international and do not have particularly high stats, in my opinion it is very unlikely that you will get a full ride anywhere in the US unless you are bringing something special to the table. I’m not saying it is impossible, but unlikely. You need to focus your research on schools that offer scholarships for international students. Good luck.
