I am interested in majoring in economics partly because it is more critcal thinking than a business major and because I would like to go to a prestigious school and I think it would be better if I wanted to go to grad school, but what job can I get with an econ major? Also would it be possible to go directly to MBA with an econ, degree from like Duke or Yale?

Well you could always work for a government organization like the World Bank, Department of Defense, etc etc.

And if your really good, you can work at a think tank.

An econ major from one of those schools could also enter some area of financial services ( say, Investment banking).

a lot of jobs… they are just more specialized

Pretty much whatever you want

^ agree with c revs…

econ is one of the most “safe” major because of the variety of options you can get.. and postgraduate option…law, mba, or whatever…

also econ degree from yale of duke, there are endless opportunity..literary(im not duke or yale student..but thats what ive heard..)

I did miss the second part of the question about going straight to MBA though, my bad. In short, not really. Sure you could get into AN MBA program, but 99% likely it won’t be a GOOD one (ie T-15). If you want to get an MBA, its all but essential that you work for a few years at least, a very, very small percentage of people direct apply to top MBA programs and are accepted.

There are a hell of a lot of good business schools that aren’t top 15..there are some good ones that aren’t even top 50…most likely he wouldn’t get into any half-way decent program.

I wasn’t trying to play down other MBA programs at all, perhaps it was a bad example. Of course there are plenty of very good programs, and they would also be very difficult to get into straight out of undergrad. I meant to frame it as if you want to get into a great program out of college, forget about it.

Agreed. I just wanted to expand on that to say that his chances aren’t that good for decent programs either.

So investment banking, don’t really want to do that I am either going to pursue law school but probably won’t or something like business, can I get into consulting?

Dbate,
If you’re attending a very good college or Ivy League, you’ll have a decent shot at getting into Management Consulting. However, make sure that your grades are above 3.7 GPA, plus a summer internship. You don’t have to be a Business/Economics major. It’s better to study a subject that you enjoy and get good grades that will reflect your interest than to follow the general trend in Business Studies and perform poorly in your classes as a result.

College is a lot of money, as well as an investment. Use your money wisely.

you could be a librarian
