Hey everyone,
I am a 22-year-old female that currently resides in Washington state, I will be graduating June 2018 with my associate’s degree in general studies, I know that an AA isn’t really much, but I will need to get a job eventually (I will get into that soon). A couple months ago I left my job for school so that I could put all my focus on my studies.
This is my plan that I have set so far…
- Transfer to a University in the city of Seattle (start school fall 2018)
- Get a job in Seattle (hopefully with my degree), I am looking for a little pay raise with my AA, one dollar or two if that’s even possible, but I kind of doubt it! haha
I’ve only ever had TWO JOBS my entire life. Retail was my first job that I worked from age 18 to 21 the other one was fast food which I have only worked there for one month (never again)
I want to study accounting and hopefully earn my BA in accounting from the University, but in between school and work, I will obviously need to try to intern as much as I can.
I am also thinking about working part time (weekends only) and intern during the week along with school so that I can continue to focus on my studies.
I don’t need to work full time because I will not have any bills to pay at all, but I do want to work so I can save my pocket change and add experience to my resume to make myself look like a great competitor once I graduate with my BA.
Thoughts? Advice?
Thanks for reading
You can try for temp work.
Also, the city of Seattle raised the minimum wage so that working weekends would likely help you earn more with a similar number of hours as now.
Focus on your grades so that you can transfer there.
Are you planning to try to find an internship at this point? With a degree in general studies? What do you want to intern in? Most places will expect a solid foundation with some knowledge in the field.
An associate’s is mostly for developing skills. If you just have a general studies is that really a transfer curriculum? Or did you just exceed 64 credits? I know in NC they have rules for this stuff and I would definitely check that out. However, in terms of work you should apply to anything and everything if you just need money. Just don’t be surprised when they are confused at what an AA in general studies is
State and federal government work. Take a civil service exam and apply for government jobs. (post office, county clerk office, VA, etc) A degree…ANY degree…A degree in basketweaving…makes a difference and gives you an advantage. You could end up with an excellent job, a living wage and good benefits.
Why accounting? You mentioned elsewhere that math is not your strongpoint. Perhaps another field might be worth considering. At present, get in somewhere on the ground floor. Get a job, not an internship, and see what opportunities allow you to work your way up.
Idk about Seattle but here in Florida alot of the kids at my college start working as substitute teachers after they get their first 30 credits done with. Pay isn’t great but it isn’t terrible either and you can practically choose your hours.
