If your school uses the A,B,C,D system and not even +/-, what keeps you guys working? In most of my classes, I can get a 90 easy without breaking a sweat, and most of my grades hover around a 97 with a fair amount of work, and it's a bitch to try to get a 100 in everything, but if you just have an A that represents anything from 90-100, what makes you work hard? Aside from learning for learning's sake and all that.

Because I can tolerate:)

Actually, I don't really care what percentage I get in class as long as it's more than 90%. I'm not a perfectionist, so I don't try to get really high grade unless + and - are involved.

Drive/Perfectionism. Whenever I get lower than my expectations, I promise myself to work three or four times as hard. It really does work, but it also stretches your sanity quite a bit.

I wish I went to one of those schools that uses a letter grade system. :| Ranks for us come down to the thousandths. :/

Uhhh, we use +/- and I don't work anyway , I just go for A-range in everything except Latin where I try for A+. There are two ways I know to do good schoolwork: by agonizing and by devotion, and I refuse to use the first both out of morals and laziness!

What keeps me working...

-My Alter-Ego (the evil one that claims that I am a failure in life)
-The annoying kids that are fighting for Rank 1 against me
- ... I'm sure there's more but I can't remember right now.

where are you all from!!!!! where i am from, an 80%+ in chemistry is almost unheard of,not to mention 90%!!!

becuase Im slightly insane

Parental expectations (not so much though)

i try to beat myself (referring back to insanity)

hmm

for my future

Just the notion of getting out of Ohio is enough. And it's not that hard to do fairly well at my school, even though my class is supercompetitive.

"getting out of Ohio," juliusmonky? That's so weird, because I would have done just about anything to get in. (I had really wanted to go to CWRU last year.)

case western's a great school, but I agree, I've gotta get out of ohio!

CWRU is different than the 'burbs. For me at least, getting out of Ohio is about the diversity and activity of city life... and the monotonous oppression of suburbia.

Juliusmonky is a cool kid though :-P.

I live in columbus, and i've lived here my entire life, so it's more about experiencing something different than hating the great state of ohio

In upper level classes, there are only 3 or 4 A's out of a class of 30-35 and of those maybe 1 is a 95 or better... I have to say that it is rather difficult to get an A in alot of classes at our school. Maybe with the +/- system at your school it is easier...? I'm not sure. When I took Latin there were two quarters when there were NO A's. Everyone got B/C's and were working rather hard to get those- and this is not AP, but regular- not weighted AT ALL.

It is for this reason that I can't see how colleges put much emphasis on grades because in some schools they are inflated and at others it is extremely difficult... but, hey, what can you do?

there's a lot of grade inflation here, which I hate, but I can't really do anything to change it

Haha, thanks Daniel, you too.

I agree with Justforgetme. Plus, Ohio's economy is going nowhere. And I'm just not interested in any schools here. I mean I'll miss my suburb (and the jews, I love the jews) but C-bus is hardly a "big" city. Time to get out.

I just HAVE to be number one in all my classes (which I did first nine weeks!)

People have begun to use me as a test of how well they do a la "What did you get on the Bio test?" "A 95" "Yes! I almost beat you!"

I like to brag about grades to make up for my complete lack of ability in athletics.

When people say, "Well, we have A+s, As, and A-s, not just As, so I probably have just as high of a grade as you" I can say "Oh, actually my lowest grade this nine weeks is a 97..."

To be loved by teachers.

To maintain my nickname of "school-lover" (aka - being a nerd)

And, like Space Ranger 454 said, a certain degree of insanity.

to be the best that i know i can be. to prove to myself and to the world that im more than everyone tells me i am.

I don't think I would work as hard if we didn't have +/-'s but even so A+'s are rare so I'm happy with anything in the A-range.

Oh but Cum Laude motivates me to try to do better.

my computers background is a pic of the db vanquish. Thats what keeps me going!
