What kind of calculator should I get for an economics class?

I will be taking a Business and Economics 100: The Global Economy. What kind of calculator should I get? Would a TI-89 be okay?

You shouldn't ever need a graphing calculator for an intro econ class. Any calculations you do are mostly for example and are simple arithmetic. The graphs involved in the course are all conceptual; there aren't any real functions. This is from my experience, anyway (ECN 203 @ Syracuse).

I don't even think I used a calculator for my Econ 100 classes.

The most you should need for an Econ class is the $3 four-function calculator that you see in the check-out line at Target.

I've never taken economics, but a TI-89 seems like overkill...

TI-89 is definitely overkill. Go with what Cards4Life said. In fact, much of the time the math is so easy you could probably do it in your head.

you don't need a ti-89 unless you are in a calc based physics course :P But, I love my ti-89 :D A ti-84 will be your best bet because i'm assuming you aren't a math major or anything in that sort of field. I prefer the graphing calculators simply because you can see what you are doing and your different steps. Don't buy a ti-89, you won't use any of the features and it will be a waste of your money.

I doubt you will be doing 3-d graphing and integrals in a general econ class :P

I had a graphing calculator and my prof wouldn't let us use them so I ended up borrowing my friends 3 dollar solar powered calculator he got at the bookstore.

The only classes in college where I was doing stuff hard enough to need a graphing calculator were the classes we weren't allowed to use them in.

Thanks for all the replies!

Get a calculator that allows you see what you punch in. It makes tracking mistakes much easier.

they didn't even let us use graphing calculators in econ 101/102 (intro micro/macro)... but in upper level classes where you sometimes need calculus, a TI-83/83+ should suffice
