What kind of credentials do you need for the honors program?

I'm instate?

Anyone already in honors from a previous year, or gemstones

You can find the stats at the UMD website and get more information there on scholars, honors and gems. My D. is in honors and is very happy with the honors program and with UMD!

love the honors program!!

you need high stats, that's all i know lol

The average SAT is 1410, and the average weighted GPA is 4.2.

i might be able to make that then...Im a junior and haven't taken the SAT yet but my weighted GPA is 4.1

Yeah, I'm really hoping for honors (instate too.) My weighted GPA is 3.93 (4.0 with midyear report; I sent quarter grades.) My SAT is 1410, so I guess I'm right on the line.

i thought honors was much much harder. That is an average and it is gonna be skewed up more than down as everyone with above a 4.2 most likely got it. I mean there has to b a good number of 4.4s,4.5s,4.6s and more that got it. I always thought it was much harder. we will see on friday

well, the 4.5s, 4.6s+ would be rather admitted into the gemstones or scholars, not the honors one.

is there a scholarship for honors?

carpe_diem1: Scholars tend to have lower stats than honors. Gemstones is, I think, part of honors.

Anyway, Cheapseats, the incoming honors freshman class was 722, but you can probably assume the actual number admitted was more than twice that (so like 2000ish.) UMD admits about 10,000 people, and the class is 4,211 people, so there you go. It's hard to get in, but not insanely so.

Also, I assume "average" was not mean, but median, in which case it cannot be skewed. I don't see what the point of publishing a mean would be.

meh, your right, it mostly likely is a median.

When my daughter applied to UMD (she is a sophomore in honors program) we were told that the honors program selected the students to be invited..then after they had made their selections the scholars program selected. Gemstone students are in the honors program and are culled from the top students who show an interest in group research..(hence those essay questions.)
As far as scholarships, most honors students will be offered something in scholarship money..but those that dont meet the cut off SAT score will not be. (naturally most kids in honors will meet that SAT score but some kids who are invited to honors could be below the SAT scholarship cut off score...)
These are the kids who may have demonstrated academic excellence with a very high GPA but just didnt test that well on SAT. Some of these students are invited to honors. When you see the SAT score for honors..some students tested well above and others below. It's an average.
Good luck!

my friend has a 4.65 but a 1320 SAT. He just doesn't like the SAT. He took the ACT and pulled a cool 32 which is said to match a 1420 SAT score. Is his score below the cutoff?

If I recall correctly and its been almost two years that I discussed this with someone..it was 1350 (old SAT) ..but to be sure you may want to call the scholarship office and ask.
Its really sad that demonstrated work ethics and excellence is sometimes overlooked by potential..ie the SAT score..But they have to have cut offs.
I dont know if they use the ACT or not.
It can sometimes be harder to get money from many public U's than private schools.

man that sucks. He got into UNC with those numbers though. He was thinking if he got into some honor programs and got some kind of scholorship he would go to UMD but UNC is an amazing school and I know he will love it there. CAN"T FEEL TOOOOOO bad for him!
