I’m a freshman in high school looking to get into a combined/accelerated med program that also allows me to pursue literary arts while maintain a somewhat laid back/warm/encouraging environment, which is why I picked Brown. I know it’s extremely competitive, which is why I was hoping for some guidance as to what kind of EC’s I should have. When I ask for examples, I mean specific programs, summer workshops, or instead of saying ‘volunteering’, add what kind. I really appreciate any help, and I’m sure I won’t be the only one.
You should not be looking for ECs to satisfy Brown. You really want posters to map out ECs for you to craft the perfect application by the time you are a senior? You are missing the point entirely. Spend your time doing things meaningful to you. Schools that count ECs don’t want students who selected ECs to look good for college and especially not if they have to ask a bunch of strangers how to spend their time. Read the following which is relevant to most competitive schools: http://mitadmissions.org/blogs/entry/applying_sideways
Volunteer at your local hospital, maybe intern doing medical research. Follow your interests- take advantage of any opportunity that will let you do that- and the EC part of the application will write itself.
@lostaccount’s advice is spot on. Pick things that are meaningful to you, regardless of how they would appear to schools. It sounds like you have an interest in medicine and in the literary arts. If so, pursue those things.
God I love that applying sideways blog post.
